O português usa «dever» para a suposição, tal como o inglês usa must: «deve estar cansado» é he must be tired. A diferença está no fundo da escala. «Não deve estar em casa» significa em português «provavelmente não está»; em inglês, he must not be at home significa que não lhe é permitido estar. A negação da suposição faz-se com cannot.

Die Form

seguroShe must be at home — her car is outside.
muito provávelThat will be the postman.
de esperarThey should be here by six.
bem possívelHe may know the answer.
concebívelIt might be a mistake.
excluídoThat cannot be true.

The lights are on — someone must be in.Está luz acesa, deve estar lá alguém.

  2. O seu contrário é cannot, não must not.

The lights are off — nobody can be in.Está tudo às escuras, não pode estar lá ninguém.

Do not answer — that will be my brother again.Não atendas, deve ser outra vez o meu irmão.

  4. could e might são aqui equivalentes e ambos fracos.

She could be stuck in traffic.Talvez esteja presa no trânsito.

Aufgepasst

Falsch:The office is dark — he must not be there.
Richtig:The office is dark — he cannot be there.

«Não deve estar» é cannot be, nunca must not be.
