Os 140, com as três formas, o significado em português e uma frase de exemplo cada um — ordenados pelo que realmente acontece e não pelo alfabeto.
Porque não por ordem alfabética
A lista habitual tem três colunas e segue o alfabeto. Encontra-se lá alguma coisa quando já se sabe o que se procura — para aprender serve de pouco, porque esconde a única ordem que aqui existe. Estes verbos não são 140 casos soltos. A maioria forma grupos em que acontece a mesma mudança, e quem tem o grupo tem vários verbos de uma vez.

As três formas iguais
14 verbosO grupo mais cómodo: não muda nada. Quem sabe cut sabe as três formas. A armadilha não está na forma, mas em não se ver na frase: o português distingue «cortei-o ontem» de «corto-o todos os dias» pela terminação do verbo; o inglês separa I cut it yesterday de I cut it every day apenas pela palavra ao lado.

Duas das três formas iguais
69 verbosO grupo mais numeroso. Quase sempre o passado e o particípio coincidem e só a forma base é diferente: quem tem a segunda forma recebe a terceira de oferta. Atenção à família de bought, thought, caught, taught: o gh não se pronuncia e as quatro formas rimam entre si.

A vogal que muda
10 verbosTrês formas diferentes, mas com um padrão sonoro que se repete: i – a – u, como em sing – sang – sung. Quem sabe um tem a melodia para os outros. Na pronúncia, o u de sung ou drunk não é o «u» português, mas uma vogal breve, mais perto do «a» fechado de «cama».

47 verbosAqui não há padrão que valha: estes verbos aprendem-se um a um, e são menos do que a fama dos irregulares faz temer. A forma que mais se usa é a terceira: com have forma o present perfect, com be a voz passiva.
