B1  ·  Los verbos modales

may, might, be allowed to

El permiso — y la suposición prudente.

may tiene dos significados. El primero es el permiso formal: May I come in? Es más cortés que can y está en los reglamentos escritos y en el trato con desconocidos. El segundo es la posibilidad: She may be at home.

might hoy no es el pasado de may sino un grado más de duda. She may come es «es bastante posible»; She might come es «cabe que venga». El español hace esa gradación con adverbios — «a lo mejor», «quizá», «tal vez» — o con el subjuntivo, y el inglés la mete dentro del verbo.

Para el permiso en otros tiempos está be allowed to: We were allowed to stay. Y may not prohíbe, algo más formal y menos cortante que must not.

Die Form

permisoMay I use your phone?
posibilidadIt may rain later.
más prudenteIt might rain later.

Die Regeln im Einzelnen

  1. may pide permiso de manera formal; can lo hace en la lengua diaria.

May I ask what this is about?¿Puedo preguntar de qué se trata?

  2. might expresa una posibilidad más insegura que may.

He might have missed the train.A lo mejor ha perdido el tren.

  3. Para el permiso en pasado y en futuro va be allowed to.

You will be allowed to enter after six.A partir de las seis pueden entrar.

  4. may as well y might as well significan: nada lo impide.

We might as well walk — the bus is not coming.Podemos ir andando igualmente, el autobús no viene.

Die typisch deutsche Falle

Aufgepasst

El español dice la posibilidad con un adverbio y deja el verbo en paz: «a lo mejor está en casa». Trasladado a la letra sale Maybe she is at home, que no es incorrecto pero suena hablado, y a veces sale la mezcla Maybe she can be at home, que no dice nada. El inglés escrito prefiere meter la duda en el verbo.

Falsch:Maybe she can be at home, I am not sure.
Richtig:She may be at home, I am not sure.

may es permiso y posibilidad; might es lo mismo, más inseguro.
