Cómo transmitir algo sin responder de ello.
Para lo que se dice sin nombrar a quien lo dice — rumores, suposiciones generales, noticias de prensa — hay dos construcciones fijas. La primera empieza por un it impersonal: It is said that the company is in trouble.
La segunda adelanta el sujeto de la subordinada y le cuelga un infinitivo: The company is said to be in trouble. Las dos dicen lo mismo; la segunda es la habitual en el periodismo.
Si lo relatado es anterior al relato, va el infinitivo compuesto: He is said to have left the country. El español dice esto con «se dice que» y con «al parecer», y tiene además un recurso propio que el inglés no tiene: el futuro y el condicional de rumor — «el ministro habría dimitido». Ese condicional no se traduce con would; se traduce con esta construcción.

Las dos construcciones son equivalentes; la del infinitivo es más breve.

Lo anterior va en infinitivo compuesto: to have más tercera forma.
The painting is known to have been stolen in 1968.Es sabido que el cuadro fue robado en 1968.
Esta forma libera a quien habla de responder por lo dicho.
He is alleged to have taken the money.Se le acusa de haber cogido el dinero.

El infinitivo compuesto se olvida con facilidad, y entonces se desplaza el tiempo. He is said to be ill dice que está enfermo; He is said to have been ill, que lo estuvo. Y el condicional de rumor del español no tiene nada que ver con would: «habría dimitido» es he is said to have resigned.
