Los phrasal verbs

give, give up, give in, give away — cuatro verbos, una raíz.

Un phrasal verb es un verbo más una partícula que juntos dan un significado nuevo: look after (cuidar de) ya no tiene nada que ver con look (mirar). En el inglés hablado están por todas partes y no hay manera de rodearlos, tampoco por la vía de los equivalentes latinos, que suelen existir (postpone en lugar de put off) pero suenan formales. Al hablante de español eso le suena engañosamente bien: «posponer» es la palabra normal en español y put off la normal en inglés.

Para la gramática cuenta sobre todo una distinción: separable o no. En los separables el complemento puede ir en medio — turn the radio off o turn off the radio. Si el complemento es un pronombre, tiene que ir en medio: turn it off, nunca turn off it.

No son separables las combinaciones con una preposición de verdad: look after the children, look after them — nunca look the children after.

  1. En los phrasal verbs separables, el pronombre va entre el verbo y la partícula.

    I will pick you up at eight.Te recojo a las ocho.

  2. Un sustantivo puede ir delante o detrás.

    Please fill in the form. / Please fill the form in.Rellene el formulario, por favor.

  3. Las combinaciones con preposición no se separan.

    We are looking for a flat.Estamos buscando piso.

  4. La misma partícula puede cambiar el significado por completo.

Aufgepasst

Turn off it es el error que más se oye. La regla no tiene excepciones: un pronombre va siempre entre el verbo y la partícula. Segundo punto: los phrasal verbs no se traducen por partes. Quien suma look y after no llega nunca a «cuidar de», y la tentación de sustituir todo por el verbo latino deja un inglés correcto y rígido.

Falsch:The light is still on — turn off it.
Richtig:The light is still on — turn it off.
