Verbos irregulares del inglés

Los 140, con sus tres formas, el significado en español y una frase de ejemplo cada uno, ordenados según lo que de verdad ocurre y no por el alfabeto.

Por qué no por orden alfabético

La lista habitual tiene tres columnas y va por orden alfabético. En ella se encuentra algo si ya se sabe lo que se busca; para aprender sirve de poco, porque oculta el único orden que hay aquí. Estos verbos no son 140 casos sueltos. La mayoría forma grupos en los que ocurre el mismo cambio, y quien tiene el grupo tiene varios verbos a la vez.

Las tres formas iguales

El grupo más cómodo: no cambia nada. Quien sabe cut sabe sus tres formas. La trampa no está en la forma, sino en que no se ve en la frase: el español separa «lo corté ayer» de «lo corto cada día» por la terminación del verbo; el inglés, I cut it yesterday de I cut it every day, solo por la palabra de al lado.

El grupo más numeroso. Casi siempre coinciden el pasado y el participio, y solo la forma base es distinta: quien tiene la segunda forma tiene la tercera de regalo.

La vocal que cambia

10 verbos

Tres formas distintas, pero con un patrón sonoro que se repite: i – a – u, como en sing – sang – sung. Quien se sabe uno tiene la melodía de los demás. Ojo al pronunciar: la u de sung o drunk no suena como la «u» española, sino como una vocal breve y apagada, más cerca de la «a».

Aquí no hay patrón que valga: estos se aprenden uno a uno, y son menos de lo que hace temer la fama de los verbos irregulares. Un consuelo para quien viene del español: salvo be, ningún verbo inglés tiene más de cinco formas (go, goes, going, went, gone).

Una forma base y dos formas que faltan. Solo cuenta lo que escribe: comillas, mayúsculas y espacios se pasan por alto, no se penalizan.
