El Present Perfect Progressive
Cuánto tiempo lleva algo en marcha — y que sigue.
La forma es have o has been más el verbo en -ing. Subraya la duración de algo que llega hasta ahora: cuánto lleva así y hasta qué punto se nota.
El español tiene para esto una construcción propia que el inglés no posee: « llevar » más gerundio. «Llevo veinte minutos esperando» es exactamente I have been waiting for twenty minutes, y quien tenga presente esa equivalencia acierta casi siempre. La trampa es que «llevo» está en presente y su equivalente inglés no.
La diferencia con el Present Perfect simple es de mirada. I have written three emails mira el resultado: tres, terminados. I have been writing emails all morning mira la actividad: toda la mañana, y se me nota.

Si se trata de una cantidad o de un resultado, va la forma simple.

Un resultado visible en el presente justifica la forma continua.

Los verbos de estado se quedan aquí también en la forma simple.

La construcción con «llevar» se traduce mal de dos maneras. La primera es literal y no existe: I carry twenty minutes waiting. La segunda es más frecuente y suena a error de principiante: I wait since twenty minutes, con el presente español pegado al inglés. La forma correcta reordena todo: el verbo pasa a compuesto, «llevar» desaparece y «desde hace» se convierte en for.
«Llevo … haciendo» es have been … -ing.
