El subjuntivo inglés
Una forma antigua que ha sobrevivido en el lenguaje administrativo.
Detrás de verbos y adjetivos de petición, recomendación y exigencia, el inglés culto usa la forma básica, sin -s y sin to: I suggest that he be informed. She insisted that we leave.
Aquí el español tiene la ventaja mayor de toda la sección, y pocas veces se aprovecha: es exactamente el mismo mecanismo. «Sugiero que venga», «insistió en que nos fuéramos», «es necesario que se informe a todos» llevan subjuntivo por la misma razón y detrás de los mismos verbos. Lo que el español conserva con una terminación propia, el inglés lo conserva quitando la terminación: he be, he apply, he not be told. Quien reconozca que en español pondría subjuntivo sabe ya dónde el inglés pide esta forma.
Los verbos son suggest, recommend, insist, demand, request, propose, require, order — y los adjetivos essential, important, necessary, vital, advisable en la fórmula It is essential that … Se niega sin do: It is important that he not be told. En inglés británico se usa más should: I suggest that he should be informed.
Además, el subjuntivo sobrevive en expresiones fijas: If I were you, as it were, be that as it may, come what may.

El error es una -s de más o un to: I suggest that he applies o I suggest to apply. Los dos están mal. Y hay uno propiamente español: «sugiero que él lo intente» lleva sujeto expreso porque el subjuntivo español no lo necesita, mientras que en inglés el sujeto no puede faltar nunca — I suggest that he try, no I suggest that try.
