Las preposiciones de lugar
Las mismas tres palabras, la misma lógica: punto, superficie, espacio.
En el lugar rige la misma escala que en el tiempo. at es el punto: at the door, at the station, at work. on es la superficie o la línea: on the table, on the wall, on the second floor. in es el espacio cerrado: in the box, in London, in the car.
Y aquí está el trabajo de fondo para quien habla español: «en» sirve para los tres. «En la mesa», «en la estación», «en la caja» llevan la misma palabra, y la diferencia entre apoyarse, estar junto a y estar dentro no se dice nunca. En inglés hay que decidirla cada vez, y la única pregunta útil es si la cosa está encima de algo, junto a algo o dentro de algo.
Unas cuantas combinaciones hay que saberlas de memoria porque no siguen esa lógica: in the picture, on the bus, on the train, on the plane, pero in the car y in a taxi. Y at home, at school, at university, sin artículo. En las direcciones: at 14 Baker Street con número, in Baker Street sin él (en inglés americano on Baker Street).

Como «en» lo cubre todo, la elección se hace al azar y sale mal la mitad de las veces: at the wall, in the third floor, on the box. La prueba no está en el español sino en la cosa: un cuadro se apoya contra la pared, luego on the wall; un piso es una superficie, luego on the third floor; una caja tiene dentro, luego in the box.
