Le quattro parole inglesi per «lasciare» e «fare»
Due verbi italiani, quattro inglesi — e nessuno vale dappertutto.
L'italiano ha qui due verbi tuttofare, e ciascuno copre due caselle inglesi. «Lasciare» vale per il permesso e per l'abbandono; «fare» vale per la costrizione e per l'incarico. L'inglese ha quattro parole distinte.
let è permettere: Let him try. leave è lasciare dietro di sé o lasciare in pace: Leave it on the table, Leave me alone. have oppure get something done è far fare: I had the car repaired. E make è costringere: They made her sign.
Si aggiunge la formula «andiamo», per cui l'inglese dice davvero let us o let’s: è l'unico punto in cui let traduce un italiano che non contiene «lasciare».

L'errore più frequente è let per tutto. I let repair my car non è una frase inglese, e I let my keys at home nemmeno: lì ci vuole leave. La domanda che risolve quasi tutti i casi: permetto, dimentico, do un incarico o costringo?
Permettere let, dimenticare leave, far fare have, costringere make.
