Il periodo ipotetico di tipo 2
Se fosse così — ma non lo è.
Il tipo 2 parla di qualcosa che chi parla ritiene poco probabile o che contraddice il presente. La frase con if va al Simple Past, la principale con would più la forma base: If I had more time, I would learn Spanish.
Quel Simple Past non indica il passato. È una forma di irrealtà, lo stesso spostamento che l'italiano fa con il congiuntivo imperfetto: «se avessi più tempo». Chi riconosce lì il proprio congiuntivo non scriverà mai if I would have.
Con to be, nell'inglese sorvegliato va were in tutte le persone: If I were you. Nel parlato si sente was, ma in quella formula fissa sempre were.

L'italiano vieta «se avrei» come l'inglese vieta if I would have, e chi è abituato a quella regola la porta con sé. Il rischio è un altro: cercare in inglese un congiuntivo che non c'è. Il congiuntivo imperfetto italiano si traduce con un semplice Simple Past — «se avessi» è if I had — e non serve nient'altro.
Un solo would per periodo, e sta nella principale.
