Tutti e 140, con le tre forme, il significato in italiano e una frase di esempio ciascuno — ordinati secondo ciò che succede davvero e non secondo l’alfabeto.
Perché non in ordine alfabetico
La lista solita ha tre colonne e segue l’alfabeto. Ci si trova qualcosa se si sa già che cosa si cerca — per imparare serve a poco, perché nasconde l’unico ordine che qui c’è. Questi verbi non sono 140 casi isolati. Quasi tutti formano gruppi in cui avviene lo stesso cambiamento, e chi ha il gruppo ha più verbi in una volta.

Le tre forme uguali
14 verbiIl gruppo più comodo: non cambia niente. Chi sa cut ne sa già tutte e tre le forme. La trappola non è la forma, ma il fatto che nella frase non si vede: l’italiano distingue «l’ho tagliato ieri» da «lo taglio ogni giorno» già nel verbo, l’inglese separa I cut it yesterday da I cut it every day solo con la parola accanto.

69 verbiIl gruppo più numeroso. Quasi sempre passato e participio coincidono e solo la forma base è diversa: chi ha la seconda forma ha la terza in regalo. Attenzione alla famiglia di bought, thought, caught, taught: il gh non si pronuncia e le quattro forme fanno rima tra loro.

La vocale che cambia
10 verbiTre forme diverse, ma su uno schema sonoro che si ripete: i – a – u, come in sing – sang – sung. Chi ne sa uno ha la melodia per gli altri. Nella pronuncia, la u di sung o drunk non è la «u» italiana, ma una vocale breve e aperta, più vicina alla «a».
