Two at once: yìbiān … yìbiān

simultaneous actions and combined qualities

Yìbiān … yìbiān puts two actions side by side; yòu … yòu puts two qualities side by side.

一边(yìbiān) before each of two verbs says that one person does both at the same time: 他(tā)一边(yìbiān)吃饭(chīfàn),一边(yìbiān)看(kàn)手机(shǒujī), “he looks at his phone while he eats”. Both 一边(yìbiān) stand after the subject, right before their verbs. With two short, one-syllable verbs, speech often shortens it to 边(biān) … 边(biān): 我们(wǒmen)边(biān)走(zǒu)边(biān)聊(liáo).

又(yòu) … 又(yòu) does the same for qualities: two adjectives or states that are both true at once. 又(yòu)便宜(piányi)又(yòu)好吃(hǎochī), “cheap and tasty”. The adjectives stand without 很(hěn), and the two usually point the same way — both good or both bad. 又(yòu) … 又(yòu) can join two verbs too, for a lively scene: 大家(dàjiā)又(yòu)唱(chàng)又(yòu)跳(tiào).

English has one little word for both, “and”, and this is exactly where it fails in Chinese. 和(hé) joins nouns — 我(wǒ)和(hé)你(nǐ) — but not normally adjectives, verbs or clauses. “Cheap and good” is not 便宜(piányi)和(hé)好(hǎo).

一边(yìbiān) needs actions that the subject is doing, and that can run in parallel. It does not work for weather, for states, or for two different people. For “while something else was happening”, Chinese uses 的(de)时候(shíhou).

The form

two actions他(tā)一边(yìbiān)吃饭(chīfàn),一边(yìbiān)看(kàn)手机(shǒujī)。
the short form我们(wǒmen)边(biān)走(zǒu)边(biān)聊(liáo)。
two qualities这(zhè)家(jiā)的(de)菜(cài)又(yòu)便宜(piányi)又(yòu)好吃(hǎochī)。
two states孩子(háizi)又(yòu)累(lèi)又(yòu)饿(è)。
two actions with 又(yòu)大家(dàjiā)又(yòu)唱(chàng)又(yòu)跳(tiào)。

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. 一边(yìbiān) stands before each of two verbs: one person does both at the same time.

她(tā)一边(yìbiān)做饭(zuòfàn),一边(yìbiān)听(tīng)音乐(yīnyuè)。She listens to music while she cooks.

  2. Both 一边(yìbiān) stand after the subject; with two short verbs the spoken form is 边(biān) … 边(biān).

    我们(wǒmen)边(biān)吃(chī)边(biān)谈(tán)吧(ba)。Let’s talk while we eat.

  3. 又(yòu) … 又(yòu) links two adjectives or states that are both true; leave 很(hěn) out.

这(zhè)件(jiàn)大衣(dàyī)又(yòu)轻(qīng)又(yòu)暖和(nuǎnhuo)。This coat is both light and warm.

  4. The two qualities usually point the same way — both good or both bad.

那(nà)条(tiáo)路(lù)又(yòu)窄(zhǎi)又(yòu)黑(hēi),晚上(wǎnshang)别(bié)走(zǒu)。That road is narrow and dark — don’t take it at night.

A closer look

Yìbiān or de shíhou?

一边(yìbiān) describes two activities that the same person keeps up together, by choice: walking and talking, cooking and listening. 的(de)时候(shíhou) sets a time frame for something else: 我(wǒ)吃饭(chīfàn)的(de)时候(shíhou),他(tā)来(lái)了(le), “he arrived while I was eating”. English “while” covers both; Chinese needs to know which one is meant.

In writing, 一面(yímiàn) … 一面(yímiàn) is a more formal twin of 一边(yìbiān) … 一边(yìbiān). Note the tones of 一(yī): yì before biān, yí before miàn, as the pinyin shows.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • the two actions belong to different people

一边(yìbiān) does not work; use 的(de)时候(shíhou) or two plain clauses.

我(wǒ)做饭(zuòfàn)的(de)时候(shíhou),他(tā)在(zài)看(kàn)电视(diànshì)。While I was cooking, he was watching TV.

一边(yìbiān) describes one subject dividing their attention. With two people there is nothing to divide.

How to spot it

  • 一边(yìbiān)…一边(yìbiān)
  • 边(biān)…边(biān)
  • 又(yòu)…又(yòu)

Worth knowing (1)
  • Mixed feelings with yòu … yòu

Feelings are the one place where the two halves often pull against each other: “glad and nervous”, “angry and sad”. 又(yòu) … 又(yòu) is exactly the way to say that both are there at once.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English “and” joins anything with anything. 和(hé) joins nouns; it does not link two adjectives that describe something. Use 又(yòu) … 又(yòu), or 很(hěn)便宜(piányi),也(yě)很(hěn)好吃(hǎochī).

Wrong:这(zhè)家(jiā)店(diàn)的(de)面包(miànbāo)便宜(piányi)和(hé)好吃(hǎochī)。
Right:这(zhè)家(jiā)店(diàn)的(de)面包(miànbāo)又(yòu)便宜(piányi)又(yòu)好吃(hǎochī)。

Yìbiān … yìbiān for two things you do at once; yòu … yòu for two things that are true at once.
