Should: yīnggāi

advice and expectation

Yīnggāi gives advice or says what is right — and also what you would expect to be the case.

应该(yīnggāi) before a verb says what is right or advisable: 你(nǐ)应该(yīnggāi)多(duō)休息(xiūxi), “you should rest more”. Like every modal verb it never changes and stands before the main verb, and it can be the short answer on its own: 应该(yīnggāi), “yes, you should”.

不(bù)应该(yīnggāi) is “should not”, and it is often a reproach: 你(nǐ)不(bù)应该(yīnggāi)这么(zhème)说(shuō), “you shouldn’t have said that” or “you shouldn’t talk like that” — the situation decides which.

English “should have done” changes the verb; Chinese does not. The regret is carried by the context, by a word such as 早(zǎo), “earlier”, and often by 的(de) at the end: 我(wǒ)应该(yīnggāi)早(zǎo)点儿(diǎnr)告诉(gàosu)你(nǐ)的(de), “I should have told you sooner”. A 了(le) after 应该(yīnggāi) does not make it past; a modal verb takes no 了(le).

Like English “should”, 应该(yīnggāi) also says what you expect to be true: 他(tā)现在(xiànzài)应该(yīnggāi)到(dào)家(jiā)了(le), “he should be home by now”. In strength it sits between 可以(kěyǐ), an option, and 得(děi) or 必须(bìxū), a must.

The form

should你(nǐ)应该(yīnggāi)多(duō)喝(hē)水(shuǐ)。
should not你(nǐ)不(bù)应该(yīnggāi)迟到(chídào)。
should have我(wǒ)应该(yīnggāi)早(zǎo)点儿(diǎnr)告诉(gàosu)你(nǐ)的(de)。
expectation他(tā)现在(xiànzài)应该(yīnggāi)到(dào)家(jiā)了(le)。
question我(wǒ)应该(yīnggāi)怎么(zěnme)办(bàn)?
reply to thanks不客气(búkèqi),应该(yīnggāi)的(de)。

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. 应该(yīnggāi) + verb: what is right or advisable.

你(nǐ)感冒(gǎnmào)了(le),应该(yīnggāi)早(zǎo)点儿(diǎnr)睡觉(shuìjiào)。You’ve got a cold; you should go to bed early.

  2. 不(bù)应该(yīnggāi) says that something is or was wrong, often as a reproach.

你(nǐ)不(bù)应该(yīnggāi)对(duì)妈妈(māma)发(fā)脾气(píqi)。You shouldn’t lose your temper with your mum.

  3. Nothing changes for “should have”: the context, and often a final 的(de), says it is too late.

昨天(zuótiān)我(wǒ)应该(yīnggāi)带(dài)伞(sǎn)的(de)。I should have taken an umbrella yesterday.

  4. 应该(yīnggāi) also says what you expect to be true.

这么(zhème)晚(wǎn)了(le),商店(shāngdiàn)应该(yīnggāi)关门(guānmén)了(le)。It is so late, the shops should be closed by now.

A closer look

How strong is yīnggāi?

Put side by side, the modal verbs of obligation make a scale. 你(nǐ)可以(kěyǐ)去(qù): you may go, if you like. 你(nǐ)应该(yīnggāi)去(qù): you ought to go. 你(nǐ)得(děi)去(qù) and 你(nǐ)必须(bìxū)去(qù): you have to go, there is no choice.

When advice should sound less like an instruction, speakers soften it: 你(nǐ)最好(zuìhǎo)早(zǎo)点儿(diǎnr)去(qù), “you’d better go early”, or turn it into a question — 是不是(shìbushì)应该(yīnggāi)…, “shouldn’t we perhaps …?”.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English marks “should have” on the verb, so learners look for a past form and hang 了(le) on 应该(yīnggāi). A modal verb takes no 了(le). The regret lies in 早(zǎo)点儿(diǎnr), “earlier”, and in the final 的(de).

Wrong:我(wǒ)应该(yīnggāi)了(le)告诉(gàosu)你(nǐ)。
Right:我(wǒ)应该(yīnggāi)早(zǎo)点儿(diǎnr)告诉(gàosu)你(nǐ)的(de)。

Yīnggāi before the verb is advice or an expectation; nothing changes for “should have”.
