Since, given that: jìrán … jiù

reasoning from an accepted fact

Jìrán takes something both speakers already accept, and jiù draws the conclusion from it.

既然(jìrán) means “since, seeing that, now that”. It starts from a fact that both speakers already accept — often something the other person has just said — and the second clause draws a conclusion from it, usually with 就(jiù) after its subject: 既然(jìrán)你(nǐ)累(lèi)了(le),就(jiù)早(zǎo)点儿(diǎnr)休息(xiūxi)吧(ba), “since you’re tired, get some rest early”.

The conclusion is typically advice, a suggestion, a decision or a question: 吧(ba), 应该(yīnggāi) and 为什么(wèishénme) are at home in the second half. A question after 既然(jìrán) often carries a gentle or not so gentle reproach: “if that is so, why …?”.

既然(jìrán) is not a general “because”. 因为(yīnwèi) gives a reason the listener may not know; 既然(jìrán) builds on something the listener knows already. Telling a teacher why you were absent is news, so it takes 因为(yīnwèi). And 既然(jìrán) differs from 如果(rúguǒ) in the same way: “if” supposes, “since” takes as given.

English “since” has a third meaning, about time: “since last year”. That is neither of these, but 自从(zìcóng) … 以后(yǐhòu) or 从(cóng) … 以来(yǐlái). 既然(jìrán) can stand before or after the subject of its clause.

The rules one by one

The form this topic is aboutThe word that calls for it

  1. 既然(jìrán) starts from a fact both speakers already accept; 就(jiù) draws the conclusion.

Since you’ve already made up your mind, I won’t say any more.

  2. The second half is often advice, a suggestion or a decision — something the speaker thinks should follow.

Seeing that it’s raining outside, let’s watch a film at home.

  3. Use 既然(jìrán) only for what the listener already knows; a cause they do not know takes 因为(yīnwèi).

Since you like hiking too, let’s go together next time.

  4. A question after 既然(jìrán) often carries a reproach: “if so, why …?”.

既然(jìrán)你(nǐ)不(bù)想(xiǎng)去(qù),为什么(wèishénme)还(hái)买(mǎi)票(piào)?If you didn’t want to go, why did you buy a ticket?

A closer look

Three meanings of English “since”

“Since you’re here, stay for dinner” builds on a known fact: 既然(jìrán). “Since the trains were on strike, I was late” gives a reason: 因为(yīnwèi) or, in writing, 由于(yóuyú). “Since I moved here, I cycle to work” is about time: 自从(zìcóng)搬(bān)到(dào)这儿(zhèr)以后(yǐhòu),我(wǒ)每天(měitiān)骑(qí)车(chē)上班(shàngbān).

In conversation, 那(nà) often does the work of 既然(jìrán) on its own, as a reply: someone says they are tired, and the answer is 那(nà)你(nǐ)早(zǎo)点儿(diǎnr)睡(shuì)吧(ba), “then go to bed early”. 既然(jìrán) spells out the reasoning that 那(nà) leaves implicit.

  • 既然(jìrán)
  • 既然(jìrán)…就(jiù)…

Worth knowing (1)
  • Jìrán rúcǐ: “in that case”

既然(jìrán)如此(rúcǐ), “that being so”, stands at the start of a sentence and refers back to whatever has just been said. It is a little formal, and common in polite or business conversation.

In that case, we’ll have to talk about it another day.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English “since” can give news: “since I was ill, I didn’t come”. 既然(jìrán) cannot — it treats the first half as something the teacher already knows, which sounds odd, and it does not pair with 所以(suǒyǐ). A reason the listener is hearing for the first time takes 因为(yīnwèi).

Right:因为(yīnwèi)我(wǒ)昨天(zuótiān)病(bìng)了(le),所以(suǒyǐ)没(méi)来(lái)上课(shàngkè)。

Jìrán builds on what is already agreed; for news, use yīnwèi.
