1  ·  Nouns, numbers and measure words

Two kinds of two: èr and liǎng

the counting two and the two of something

Èr is the digit you count with; liǎng is the two you have of something.

Chinese has two words for “two”. 二(èr) is the number as a number: you count 一(yī)、二(èr)、三(sān), and you use it in maths, in ordinals (第二(dì'èr), second), in the names of months (二月(èryuè), February) and in phone and room numbers. 两(liǎng) is “two of something”: it stands before a measure word — 两(liǎng)个(ge)人(rén), two people, 两(liǎng)本(běn)书(shū), two books.

So the practical test is what follows. If a measure word comes next, a single two is 两(liǎng). This includes the nouns that count themselves: 两(liǎng)天(tiān), two days, 两(liǎng)年(nián), two years, and the clock, 两(liǎng)点(diǎn), two o'clock.

At the end of a longer number the two is always 二(èr), even before a measure word: 十二(shí'èr)个(ge), twelve, 二十二(èrshí'èr)个(ge), twenty-two — never “ten-liǎng”. At the front of the big place words both are heard: 两百(liǎngbǎi) and 二百(èrbǎi) are both two hundred, while 两千(liǎngqiān) and 两万(liǎngwàn) are much more common than the forms with 二(èr).

English has one “two”, so learners tend to use the one they learned first, while counting — and say “èr ge” for two people. It is one of the first mistakes a Chinese ear notices. Prices show both words side by side: 两(liǎng)块(kuài)二(èr) is two yuan twenty, 两(liǎng) before the measure word 块(kuài), 二(èr) for the twenty cents at the end.

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. Before a measure word, a two on its own is 两(liǎng).

    我(wǒ)有(yǒu)两(liǎng)个(ge)妹妹(mèimei)。I have two younger sisters.

  2. At the end of a longer number it is always 二(èr), even before a measure word.

    我们(wǒmen)班(bān)有(yǒu)二十二(èrshí'èr)个(ge)学生(xuésheng)。Our class has twenty-two students.

  3. For counting, ordinals, months and dates, use 二(èr).

她(tā)的(de)生日(shēngrì)是(shì)二月(èryuè)十四(shísì)号(hào)。Her birthday is on the fourteenth of February.

  4. Before 千(qiān) and 万(wàn), 两(liǎng) is the usual choice.

这(zhè)台(tái)电视(diànshì)两千(liǎngqiān)块(kuài)。This television costs two thousand yuan.

A closer look

Two in prices and weights

Prices follow the rule exactly. ¥2.20 is 两(liǎng)块(kuài)二(èr): 两(liǎng) because the measure word 块(kuài) follows, 二(èr) because the twenty cents stand at the end and their measure word is dropped. ¥22 is 二十二(èrshí'èr)块(kuài), because there the two ends a longer number.

Markets and restaurants still weigh in two traditional units: 斤(jīn), half a kilo, and 两(liǎng), a tenth of a 斤(jīn). Two 斤(jīn) is 两(liǎng)斤(jīn) as expected; but two of the unit 两(liǎng) is 二(èr)两(liǎng), because “liǎng liǎng” is avoided. In the north, dumplings and noodles are often ordered this way.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • the measure word is the old weight 两(liǎng) itself

the two before it is 二(èr): 二(èr)两(liǎng), a hundred grams.

我(wǒ)要(yào)二(èr)两(liǎng)饺子(jiǎozi)。I'd like two liang of dumplings.

Two identical syllables in a row are avoided, so the counting two steps in.

How to spot it

  • 两(liǎng)个(ge)
  • 二(èr)
  • 第二(dì'èr)
  • 两(liǎng)点(diǎn)

Worth knowing (1)
  • Two o'clock and two minutes

The clock follows the rule exactly. The hour stands before the measure word 点(diǎn), so two o'clock is 两(liǎng)点(diǎn) and twelve o'clock 十二(shí'èr)点(diǎn). Minutes below ten are read with 零(líng), and then the two ends the number: 2:02 is 两(liǎng)点(diǎn)零(líng)二(èr)分(fēn).

现在(xiànzài)两(liǎng)点(diǎn)零(líng)二(èr)分(fēn)。It is two minutes past two.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

二(èr) is the two you learned while counting, so it is the one that comes to mind first. But a number standing directly before a measure word is a quantity, not a digit, and a quantity of two is 两(liǎng).

Wrong:我(wǒ)有(yǒu)二(èr)个(ge)哥哥(gēge)。
Right:我(wǒ)有(yǒu)两(liǎng)个(ge)哥哥(gēge)。

Count with èr; have liǎng of something — unless the two ends a longer number.
