Ne in depth

the many uses of the particle ne

Ne asks “and what about …?”, keeps a situation going, makes a question thoughtful, and quietly points something out.

The first uses of 呢(ne) come early: after a noun alone it asks “and what about …?” (我(wǒ)很(hěn)好(hǎo),你(nǐ)呢(ne)?), and without context it asks where something is (我(wǒ)的(de)钥匙(yàoshi)呢(ne)?, “where are my keys?”). After an 要是(yàoshi) or 如果(rúguǒ) clause, it asks “and what if …?”.

After a question that already has a question word or an A-not-A form, 呢(ne) makes it reflective, as if the speaker were thinking it over: 我们(wǒmen)去(qù)哪儿(nǎr)呢(ne)?, “now where shall we go?”. Such a question never takes 吗(ma), which asks yes or no — and the question word has already made the sentence a question.

After a statement about something going on, 呢(ne) says that it is still the case: 他(tā)在(zài)开会(kāihuì)呢(ne), “he’s in a meeting”, 门(mén)开(kāi)着(zhe)呢(ne), “the door is open”, 我(wǒ)还(hái)没(méi)吃(chī)呢(ne), “I haven’t eaten yet”.

Finally, after a plain statement, 呢(ne) points something out, often against what the other person seems to think: 还(hái)早(zǎo)呢(ne), “it’s still early, you know”, 他(tā)才(cái)五(wǔ)岁(suì)呢(ne), “he’s only five”. It is a gentle correction, not a question, and the sentence ends on a full stop.

The rules one by one

The form this topic is aboutThe word that calls for it

  1. After a noun alone, ne asks “what about …?” or “where is …?”.

我(wǒ)喝(hē)茶(chá),你(nǐ)呢(ne)?I’m having tea — what about you?

  2. After a question word or an A-not-A form, ne makes the question reflective; ma is impossible there.

这个(zhège)字(zì)怎么(zěnme)念(niàn)呢(ne)? Now how do you read this character?

  3. After a statement about something going on, ne says it is still the case.

孩子(háizi)还(hái)在(zài)睡(shuì)呢(ne),小(xiǎo)点儿(diǎnr)声(shēng)。The child is still asleep — keep your voice down.

  4. After a plain statement, ne points something out, often against what the other person thinks.

他(tā)才(cái)五(wǔ)岁(suì)呢(ne),别(bié)要求(yāoqiú)太(tài)高(gāo)。He’s only five, you know — don’t expect too much.

  5. After an if-clause, ne asks “and what if …?”.

要是(yàoshi)明天(míngtiān)下雨(xiàyǔ)呢(ne)? And what if it rains tomorrow?

A closer look

Ne and ma: two different questions

吗(ma) turns any statement into a yes-no question. 呢(ne) does not: 他(tā)在(zài)睡觉(shuìjiào)呢(ne) is a statement, “he’s asleep”, and ends on a full stop. 呢(ne) only asks when the question is already there — in a question word, in an A-not-A form, or in what is left out after a bare noun.

What the uses of 呢(ne) share is a link to the conversation in progress. “And you?” picks up what was just said; “still asleep” describes a situation that carries on; “it’s still early” answers a worry the other person has shown. 呢(ne) ties the sentence to the moment, which is why it sounds so natural in speech and so rare in formal writing.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • ne follows a topic in the middle of a sentence

it marks a pause and a contrast: “as for …”.

我(wǒ)呢(ne),比较(bǐjiào)喜欢(xǐhuan)安静(ānjìng)的(de)地方(dìfang)。As for me, I prefer quiet places.

The question “and what about …?” is answered straight away by the speaker: the topic is held up, set against what came before, and then commented on.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

A question word already makes the sentence a question, and 吗(ma) would ask yes or no on top of it. The particle that fits is 呢(ne) — or none at all. Take care with 什么(shénme): with 吗(ma) it stops being a question word and means “something”, so 你(nǐ)想(xiǎng)吃(chī)什么(shénme)吗(ma)? is “do you want something to eat?”.

Wrong:他(tā)为什么(wèishénme)不(bù)来(lái)吗(ma)?
Right:他(tā)为什么(wèishénme)不(bù)来(lái)呢(ne)?

Ne asks what about, says still, and quietly points something out.
