Under, in and in terms of: zài … xià, zhōng, shàng

abstract frames built like places

Zài, a noun and xià, zhōng or shàng set the condition, the process or the area a statement holds in.

在(zài)桌子(zhuōzi)上(shàng) puts something on a table. The same frame — 在(zài) + noun + place word — also works with abstract nouns, and then it sets the circumstances of a whole sentence. 在(zài)…下(xià), “under”, takes a condition, a help, an influence or a leadership: 在(zài)老师(lǎoshī)的(de)帮助(bāngzhù)下(xià), “with the teacher’s help”, literally “under the teacher’s help”.

在(zài)…中(zhōng), “in”, places something inside a process, an activity or a group: 在(zài)学习(xuéxí)中(zhōng), in the course of studying; 在(zài)这些(zhèxiē)人(rén)中(zhōng), among these people. 在(zài)…上(shàng), “on”, limits a statement to an area: 在(zài)工作(gōngzuò)上(shàng), as far as work goes; 在(zài)这(zhè)个(ge)问题(wèntí)上(shàng), on this issue.

The place word follows the noun, and each noun has its favourite. Conditions and support take 下(xià): 帮助(bāngzhù), 支持(zhīchí), 影响(yǐngxiǎng), 情况(qíngkuàng), 条件(tiáojiàn), 压力(yālì). Processes and groups take 中(zhōng): 过程(guòchéng), 比赛(bǐsài), 讨论(tǎolùn). Areas take 上(shàng): 工作(gōngzuò), 学习(xuéxí), 历史(lìshǐ), 问题(wèntí).

English speakers translate “with your help” with 用(yòng) or 跟(gēn), and “under these circumstances” word for word. Chinese says 在(zài)你(nǐ)的(de)帮助(bāngzhù)下(xià) and 在(zài)这(zhè)种(zhǒng)情况(qíngkuàng)下(xià), and puts the frame before the verb, usually at the start of the sentence.

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. Zài … xià sets a condition, a support or an influence under which something happens.

在(zài)父母(fùmǔ)的(de)支持(zhīchí)下(xià),他(tā)开(kāi)了(le)一(yì)家(jiā)咖啡馆(kāfēiguǎn)。With his parents’ support, he opened a café.

  2. Zài … zhōng places something within a process, an activity or a group.

在(zài)讨论(tǎolùn)中(zhōng),大家(dàjiā)提出(tíchū)了(le)很(hěn)多(duō)好(hǎo)办法(bànfǎ)。In the discussion, people came up with many good ideas.

  3. Zài … shàng limits a statement to one area: as regards, in terms of.

在(zài)学习(xuéxí)上(shàng),他(tā)从来(cónglái)不(bú)让(ràng)父母(fùmǔ)操心(cāoxīn)。When it comes to studying, he has never given his parents anything to worry about.

  4. The whole frame stands before the verb, usually at the start of the sentence.

他(tā)在(zài)压力(yālì)下(xià)反而(fǎn'ér)做(zuò)得(de)更(gèng)好(hǎo)。Under pressure, he actually does even better.

A closer look

Picturing the three frames

The place words keep their spatial picture. 下(xià) is “underneath”: help, support and pressure are something you stand under, like a roof or a weight. 中(zhōng) is “inside”: you are in the middle of a process or among a group. 上(shàng) is “on”: a statement is placed on one point or one area and holds there.

In the spoken language 里(lǐ) often does the job of 中(zhōng): 在(zài)生活(shēnghuó)里(lǐ) sounds more relaxed than 在(zài)生活(shēnghuó)中(zhōng). And 在(zài)…方面(fāngmiàn), “in the area of”, is a slightly more formal neighbour of 在(zài)…上(shàng).

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • the noun is 方面(fāngmiàn)

no place word is added: 在(zài)这(zhè)方面(fāngmiàn).

在(zài)这(zhè)方面(fāngmiàn),他(tā)比(bǐ)我(wǒ)有(yǒu)经验(jīngyàn)。In this respect, he has more experience than I do.

方面(fāngmiàn) already means “aspect, area”; it does by itself the job that 上(shàng) does after other nouns.

How to spot it

  • 在(zài)…下(xià)
  • 在(zài)…中(zhōng)
  • 在(zài)…上(shàng)
  • 的(de)帮助(bāngzhù)下(xià)
  • 情况(qíngkuàng)下(xià)

Worth knowing (1)
  • Shēnghuó takes two place words

在(zài)生活(shēnghuó)中(zhōng) means “in life”: the things that happen to people. 在(zài)生活(shēnghuó)上(shàng) means “as regards daily living”: food, housing, practical care. The noun is the same; the place word decides which sense is meant.

在(zài)生活(shēnghuó)上(shàng),学校(xuéxiào)给(gěi)了(le)我们(wǒmen)很(hěn)多(duō)照顾(zhàogù)。As regards day-to-day living, the school took good care of us.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English “with your help” suggests 用(yòng), but 用(yòng) is for tools in the hand. Help is something you act under: 在(zài)…的(de)帮助(bāngzhù)下(xià).

Wrong:用(yòng)你(nǐ)的(de)帮助(bāngzhù),我(wǒ)找到(zhǎodào)了(le)工作(gōngzuò)。
Right:在(zài)你(nǐ)的(de)帮助(bāngzhù)下(xià),我(wǒ)找到(zhǎodào)了(le)工作(gōngzuò)。

Conditions take xià, processes take zhōng, areas take shàng — and zài opens all three.
