Otherwise: fǒuzé, bùrán, yàobùrán

what follows if something is not done

First what should happen, then fǒuzé or bùrán and what will follow if it does not.

The pattern has two halves: first what should be done or what is the case, then 否则(fǒuzé), 不然(bùrán) or 要不然(yàobùrán), “otherwise, or else”, and what happens if it is not: 快(kuài)点儿(diǎnr)走(zǒu),不然(bùrán)要(yào)迟到(chídào)了(le), “hurry up, or we’ll be late”. The conjunction opens the second clause, before its subject.

The three words differ in register. 否则(fǒuzé) belongs to careful speech, writing, instructions and rules. 不然(bùrán) and 要不然(yàobùrán) are the everyday words, and 要不(yàobù) is shorter still. The second clause often carries 会(huì) … 的(de), 就(jiù) or 要(yào) … 了(le), because it describes a likely consequence.

English “or” does double duty: “tea or coffee?” offers a choice, and “hurry up, or you’ll miss the train” threatens a consequence. Chinese has separate words. 或者(huòzhě) and 还是(háishi) are for choices only; the “or else” kind of “or” is 不然(bùrán), 要不然(yàobùrán) or 否则(fǒuzé).

The pattern can also look back: 幸好(xìnghǎo)你(nǐ)提醒(tíxǐng)我(wǒ)了(le),要不然(yàobùrán)我(wǒ)就(jiù)忘(wàng)了(le), “luckily you reminded me, otherwise I’d have forgotten”. And with 除非(chúfēi) in the first half it becomes “unless”: 除非(chúfēi) names the one condition, 否则(fǒuzé) says what happens without it.

The form

要不(yàobù): how about …

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. The clause with 否则(fǒuzé) comes second and says what happens if the first does not.

Check the doors and windows before you go out; otherwise it isn’t safe.

  2. 不然(bùrán) and 要不然(yàobùrán) are the everyday words; 否则(fǒuzé) belongs to careful speech and writing.

Take an umbrella, or you’ll be in trouble if it rains.

  3. The conjunction stands at the start of its clause, in front of any subject.

I have to go right now, or my mum will worry.

Unless you have a ticket, you can’t go in.

A closer look

Yàobù: otherwise, or how about

要不(yàobù) has two jobs. After an instruction it means “otherwise”, like 要不然(yàobùrán). At the start of a sentence, with no instruction before it, it makes a suggestion: 要不(yàobù)我们(wǒmen)明天(míngtiān)再(zài)去(qù)吧(ba), “how about we go tomorrow instead?”. The logic is the same — “if not this, then that” — but the second use is softer and very common.

The same idea can be put the other way round with The 否则(fǒuzé) version puts the positive instruction first, which is why it is so frequent in advice, notices and rules.

How to spot it

  • 否则(fǒuzé)
  • 不然(bùrán)
  • 要不然(yàobùrán)
  • 要不(yàobù)
  • 除非(chúfēi)…否则(fǒuzé)

Worth knowing (1)
  • Fǒuzé on notices

Written rules and notices like the pattern because it states the rule first and the consequence second. They use 否则(fǒuzé) rather than the spoken words, and often the written negative 勿(wù), “do not”.

No smoking — offenders will be fined.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English “or” is both “or” of a choice and “or else”. 或者(huòzhě) only offers choices — tea or coffee — and cannot announce a consequence. For “do this, or …”, use 不然(bùrán), 要不然(yàobùrán) or 否则(fǒuzé).

Right:快(kuài)点儿(diǎnr),不然(bùrán)我们(wǒmen)会(huì)错过(cuòguò)火车(huǒchē)的(de)。

In “do this, or else”, the “or” is bùrán or fǒuzé — never huòzhě.
