More and more: yuèláiyuè and yuè … yuè

progressive and correlative comparison

Yuèláiyuè describes a change that keeps growing; yuè … yuè ties one change to another.

越来越(yuèláiyuè) before an adjective means “more and more”: 天气(tiānqì)越来越(yuèláiyuè)冷(lěng)了(le), “it is getting colder and colder”. Because it describes a change, the sentence usually ends with the 了(le) of a new situation. It works with verbs of feeling too: 我(wǒ)越来越(yuèláiyuè)喜欢(xǐhuan)这儿(zhèr)了(le).

越(yuè) A 越(yuè) B ties two changes together: “the more A, the more B”. Each 越(yuè) stands directly before its own verb or adjective, and each subject stands before its own 越(yuè): 你(nǐ)越(yuè)解释(jiěshì),我(wǒ)越(yuè)糊涂(hútu), “the more you explain, the more confused I get”. With one subject the two halves run together: 雨(yǔ)越(yuè)下(xià)越(yuè)大(dà), “it rained harder and harder”. 越来越(yuèláiyuè) is in fact a frozen form of this pattern: “the more it comes, the more”.

Neither pattern allows 很(hěn), 非常(fēicháng) or 太(tài) before the adjective: the pattern itself already says how the degree changes. And 越来越(yuèláiyuè) stands after the subject, never in front of it the way “more and more” sometimes does in English.

Two set phrases are worth learning whole. “More and more people” is 越来越(yuèláiyuè)多(duō)的(de)人(rén), with 多(duō) as the adjective and 的(de) before the noun. And “the sooner the better” is 越(yuè)快(kuài)越(yuè)好(hǎo) — the same frame takes any adjective: 越(yuè)便宜(piányi)越(yuè)好(hǎo), “the cheaper the better”.

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. 越来越(yuèláiyuè) stands after the subject and before the adjective or verb.

她(tā)的(de)中文(Zhōngwén)越来越(yuèláiyuè)好(hǎo)了(le)。Her Chinese is getting better and better.

  2. No 很(hěn) after 越来越(yuèláiyuè): the phrase already says how the degree changes.

房租(fángzū)越来越(yuèláiyuè)贵(guì)了(le)。Rents are getting more and more expensive.

  3. In 越(yuè) A 越(yuè) B, each 越(yuè) stands directly before its verb or adjective.

这(zhè)首(shǒu)歌(gē)我(wǒ)越(yuè)听(tīng)越(yuè)喜欢(xǐhuan)。The more I listen to this song, the more I like it.

  4. With two different subjects, each subject comes before its own 越(yuè).

天(tiān)越(yuè)冷(lěng),人(rén)越(yuè)想(xiǎng)待(dāi)在(zài)家(jiā)。The colder it gets, the more people want to stay at home.

  5. “More and more” before a noun is 越来越(yuèláiyuè)多(duō)的(de).

越来越(yuèláiyuè)多(duō)的(de)年轻人(niánqīngrén)喜欢(xǐhuan)骑(qí)自行车(zìxíngchē)。More and more young people like cycling.

A closer look

Less and less

English has “less and less”; Chinese has no word for “less” in this sense. It uses the opposite adjective — 越来越(yuèláiyuè)少(shǎo), 越来越(yuèláiyuè)小(xiǎo) — or puts 不(bù) after 越来越(yuèláiyuè): 他(tā)越来越(yuèláiyuè)不(bú)爱(ài)说话(shuōhuà)了(le), “he talks less and less”.

The same verb often appears in both halves of 越(yuè) … 越(yuè) when the second half describes a feeling that grows as you do something: 越(yuè)想(xiǎng)越(yuè)生气(shēngqì), “the more he thought about it, the angrier he got”; 越(yuè)看(kàn)越(yuè)喜欢(xǐhuan), “the more I look at it, the more I like it”.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • the second half is a judgement such as “better” or “worse”

the sentence can be negated as a whole with 不(bú)是(shì) in front.

东西(dōngxi)不(bú)是(shì)越(yuè)贵(guì)越(yuè)好(hǎo)。Things are not necessarily better the more they cost.

不(bú)是(shì) rejects the rule of thumb itself, not one of its two halves.

How to spot it

  • 越来越(yuèláiyuè)
  • 越(yuè)…越(yuè)…
  • 越(yuè)…越(yuè)好(hǎo)

越(yuè) + adjective + 越(yuè)好(hǎo) says what you want: 越(yuè)多(duō)越(yuè)好(hǎo), “the more the better”, 越(yuè)便宜(piányi)越(yuè)好(hǎo), “the cheaper the better”. It can stand on its own as a whole reply.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

越来越(yuèláiyuè) already says how the degree is changing, so the adjective after it stands bare. Adding 很(hěn) out of habit would be like saying “more and more very cold”.

Wrong:天气(tiānqì)越来越(yuèláiyuè)很(hěn)冷(lěng)了(le)。
Right:天气(tiānqì)越来越(yuèláiyuè)冷(lěng)了(le)。

Yuèláiyuè plus the bare adjective; in yuè … yuè, each yuè sits right before its own word.
