Towards: wǎng, xiàng and cháo

prepositions of direction

Wǎng points a movement somewhere, xiàng can also aim at a person, and cháo says which way something faces.

All three translate as “towards”, and all three stand before the verb: 往(wǎng)前(qián)走(zǒu), “go straight on”. They differ in what they combine with. 往(wǎng) is the word of street directions: it gives the direction of a movement and takes a direction word or a place — 往(wǎng)左(zuǒ)拐(guǎi), “turn left”, 往(wǎng)东(dōng)走(zǒu), “go east”.

向(xiàng) can also mark the direction of a movement (向(xiàng)前(qián)看(kàn), “look ahead”), and it can do more: it aims an action at a person. 向(xiàng)他(tā)借(jiè) is “borrow from him”, 向(xiàng)他(tā)学习(xuéxí) “learn from his example”, 向(xiàng)你(nǐ)道歉(dàoqiàn) “apologise to you”. 往(wǎng) cannot do that. 向(xiàng) also sounds a little more formal.

朝(cháo) says which way something faces or points: 我(wǒ)的(de)房间(fángjiān)朝(cháo)南(nán), “my room faces south”. Here 朝(cháo) is the verb of the sentence, which 往(wǎng) is not. It also gives the direction of a look or a gesture towards someone: 她(tā)朝(cháo)我(wǒ)笑(xiào)了(le)笑(xiào), “she smiled at me”.

English speakers make two mistakes here. They put the direction after the verb, as in “walk towards the station”, and they use 往(wǎng) with a person, where only 向(xiàng) or 朝(cháo) fits. For directions in the street, the safe pattern is always 往(wǎng) + direction + verb.

The form

go straight on往(wǎng)前(qián)走(zǒu)
turn left往(wǎng)左(zuǒ)拐(guǎi)
learn from someone向(xiàng)他(tā)学习(xuéxí)
face south房间(fángjiān)朝(cháo)南(nán)
wave at someone朝(cháo)我(wǒ)招手(zhāoshǒu)
a train bound for开往(kāiwǎng)上海(Shànghǎi)的(de)火车(huǒchē)

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. All three stand before the verb, with the direction or place they point to.

你(nǐ)往(wǎng)前(qián)走(zǒu),银行(yínháng)就(jiù)在(zài)右边(yòubian)。Go straight on, and the bank is right there on the right.

  2. 往(wǎng) is the everyday word for the direction of a movement — the word for giving directions.

    到(dào)了(le)路口(lùkǒu)往(wǎng)右(yòu)拐(guǎi)。Turn right at the junction.

  3. 向(xiàng) can also aim at a person: the one an action is directed at.

我们(wǒmen)都(dōu)应该(yīnggāi)向(xiàng)他(tā)学习(xuéxí)。We should all learn from his example.

  4. 朝(cháo) says which way something faces, and it can be the verb of the sentence on its own.

我(wǒ)的(de)卧室(wòshì)朝(cháo)东(dōng),早上(zǎoshang)很(hěn)亮(liàng)。My bedroom faces east, so it is bright in the mornings.

A closer look

Which one when

With a plain direction and a verb of movement, all three are possible and 往(wǎng) is the most everyday: 往(wǎng)前(qián)走(zǒu), 向(xiàng)前(qián)走(zǒu), 朝(cháo)前(qián)走(zǒu). With a person, only 向(xiàng) and 朝(cháo) work: 朝(cháo)他(tā)招手(zhāoshǒu), “wave at him”.

When the person is not a target in space but the other side of an exchange — borrowing, asking, apologising, learning — it has to be 向(xiàng): 向(xiàng)银行(yínháng)借(jiè)钱(qián), “borrow money from the bank”. And when nothing moves at all, because a house or a window simply faces a way, it is 朝(cháo).

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • a sign, a ticket or a timetable names where a train, plane or bus is going

往(wǎng) follows the verb: 开往(kāiwǎng), 飞往(fēiwǎng), “bound for”.

这(zhè)趟(tàng)火车(huǒchē)开往(kāiwǎng)北京(Běijīng)。This train is bound for Beijing.

These are set phrases of the written language, kept from an older style; in ordinary sentences 往(wǎng) stays before the verb.

Worth knowing (1)
  • Directions in the street

Directions come as a chain of short steps, each with 往(wǎng): 往(wǎng)前(qián)走(zǒu), then 往(wǎng)左(zuǒ)拐(guǎi). In northern cities people often give compass points instead of left and right: 往(wǎng)北(běi)走(zǒu).

出(chū)门(mén)往(wǎng)左(zuǒ)拐(guǎi),再(zài)往(wǎng)前(qián)走(zǒu)两(liǎng)百(bǎi)米(mǐ)。Turn left out of the door, then go straight on for two hundred metres.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English says “walk ahead”, verb first. In Chinese the direction is part of the scene and comes before the verb, exactly like a place with 在(zài).

Wrong:你(nǐ)走(zǒu)往(wǎng)前(qián)。
Right:你(nǐ)往(wǎng)前(qián)走(zǒu)。

Wǎng for the way you go, xiàng also for the person you turn to, cháo for the way something faces.
