About and regarding: guānyú and duìyú

a topic and the target of an attitude

Guānyú names the subject matter something is about; duìyú names what an attitude or a treatment is aimed at.

关于(guānyú) means “about, concerning” and names a topic. Most often it stands with 的(de) before a noun: 关于(guānyú)中国(Zhōngguó)历史(lìshǐ)的(de)书(shū), “a book about Chinese history”. The English order is turned round: the about-phrase comes first, the book last. As an adverbial, a 关于(guānyú) phrase opens the sentence and sets its topic: 关于(guānyú)这(zhè)个(ge)问题(wèntí),我们(wǒmen)明天(míngtiān)再(zài)讨论(tǎolùn).

对于(duìyú) means “towards, with regard to” and marks what an opinion, a feeling or a treatment is directed at: 对于(duìyú)这(zhè)个(ge)决定(juédìng),大家(dàjiā)都(dōu)很(hěn)满意(mǎnyì). It can stand before the subject or right after it. In nearly every place where 对于(duìyú) fits, plain 对(duì) fits too — but not the other way round: 他(tā)对(duì)我(wǒ)很(hěn)好(hǎo), “he is good to me”, cannot take 对于(duìyú).

A quick test: if “on the subject of” fits, use 关于(guānyú); if “towards” fits, use 对于(duìyú). A 关于(guānyú) phrase used as an adverbial must come before the subject — 我们(wǒmen)关于(guānyú)… is wrong — while 对于(duìyú) may follow it: 我(wǒ)对于(duìyú)这(zhè)件(jiàn)事(shì)没有(méiyǒu)意见(yìjiàn).

English speakers reach for 关于(guānyú) wherever English has “about”: talk about, think about, worry about. Chinese verbs usually take their object directly — 我们(wǒmen)谈(tán)了(le)这(zhè)个(ge)问题(wèntí), 别(bié)担心(dānxīn)我(wǒ). 关于(guānyú) sets a topic; it is not a link between a verb and its object.

The form

a book about …关于(guānyú)历史(lìshǐ)的(de)书(shū)
a topic at the start关于(guānyú)这(zhè)件(jiàn)事(shì),…
the target of an attitude对于(duìyú)这(zhè)个(ge)结果(jiéguǒ),…
after the subject: only duìyú我(wǒ)对于(duìyú)这(zhè)件(jiàn)事(shì)没有(méiyǒu)意见(yìjiàn)。
the everyday form of duìyú他(tā)对(duì)音乐(yīnyuè)很(hěn)感(gǎn)兴趣(xìngqù)。

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. Guānyú, a noun and de come before the noun they describe: “a … about …”.

我(wǒ)在(zài)看(kàn)一(yì)本(běn)关于(guānyú)茶(chá)的(de)书(shū)。I am reading a book about tea.

  2. As an adverbial, a guānyú phrase opens the sentence, before the subject.

关于(guānyú)放假(fàngjià)的(de)安排(ānpái),老师(lǎoshī)明天(míngtiān)会(huì)告诉(gàosu)大家(dàjiā)。As for the holiday arrangements, the teacher will tell everyone tomorrow.

  3. Duìyú marks what an opinion, an attitude or a treatment is directed at; it may stand before or after the subject.

大家(dàjiā)对于(duìyú)新(xīn)规定(guīdìng)有(yǒu)不同(bùtóng)的(de)看法(kànfǎ)。People have different views on the new rule.

  4. Where duì means “to” or “towards a person”, duìyú cannot replace it.

老师(lǎoshī)对(duì)学生(xuésheng)很(hěn)耐心(nàixīn)。The teacher is very patient with the students.

A closer look

Why guānyú stands in front

A Chinese sentence often begins with its topic and then comments on it. 关于(guānyú) is a way of announcing that topic explicitly: “on the matter of …, here is what I have to say”. That is why it belongs at the very front, and why it cannot hang off a verb the way English “about” does.

The same logic shows in headings. Official notices, reports and the titles of many books begin with 关于(guānyú) and end with a noun: 关于(guānyú)春节(Chūnjié)放假(fàngjià)的(de)通知(tōngzhī), “notice concerning the Spring Festival holiday”. Read such a heading from the end: first what kind of document it is, then what it is about.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • a sentence says what something is about with 是(shì)

是(shì)关于(guānyú)…的(de) puts guānyú after the verb.

    这(zhè)部(bù)电影(diànyǐng)是(shì)关于(guānyú)什么(shénme)的(de)?What is this film about?

The guānyú phrase is a 的(de) phrase with its noun left out — “a book that is an about-something one” — so it stands where any noun after 是(shì) would.

How to spot it

  • 关于(guānyú)…的(de)

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

“Discuss” takes its object directly in Chinese, as it does in English: 讨论(tǎolùn)这(zhè)个(ge)问题(wèntí). 关于(guānyú) cannot sit between a verb and its object. Either put it at the start as a topic, or build a noun with it: 关于(guānyú)这(zhè)个(ge)问题(wèntí)的(de)讨论(tǎolùn).

Wrong:我们(wǒmen)讨论(tǎolùn)了(le)关于(guānyú)这(zhè)个(ge)问题(wèntí)。
Right:关于(guānyú)这(zhè)个(ge)问题(wèntí),我们(wǒmen)讨论(tǎolùn)了(le)很(hěn)久(jiǔ)。

Guānyú says what something is about and goes in front; duìyú says what an attitude is aimed at.
