How often: from always to never

adverbs of frequency

Chángcháng, jīngcháng, zǒngshì, yìzhí, yǒushíhou and cónglái bù or méi — all before the verb.

Words for how often stand where every Chinese adverb stands: after the subject, before the verb. 常常(chángcháng) and 经常(jīngcháng) mean “often”, 总是(zǒngshì) means “always, every time”, 有时候(yǒushíhou) means “sometimes”. Only 有时候(yǒushíhou) is free to open the sentence as well, because it is really a time phrase, “at some times”.

“Never” has two forms, and the choice is the same as the one between 不(bù) and 没(méi). For a habit or a rule, 从来(cónglái)不(bù): 他(tā)从来(cónglái)不(bù)喝(hē)酒(jiǔ), “he never drinks”. For something that has never happened, 从来(cónglái)没(méi)…过(guo): 我(wǒ)从来(cónglái)没(méi)去(qù)过(guo)国外(guówài), “I have never been abroad”.

一直(yìzhí) is often translated “always”, but it means “all along, without a break”: 我(wǒ)一直(yìzhí)住(zhù)在(zài)这儿(zhèr), “I have lived here all along”. It describes one continuous stretch, not a habit that repeats. 总是(zǒngshì) is the repeating one — and it often carries a complaint: 你(nǐ)总是(zǒngshì)迟到(chídào), “you’re always late”.

One small trap: the negative of 常常(chángcháng) is 不(bù)常(cháng) or 不(bù)经常(jīngcháng), never 不(bù)常常(chángcháng).

The form

often他(tā)常常(chángcháng)去(qù)公园(gōngyuán)跑步(pǎobù)。
not often我(wǒ)不(bù)常(cháng)看(kàn)电视(diànshì)。
always, every time她(tā)总是(zǒngshì)很(hěn)早(zǎo)到(dào)。
sometimes有时候(yǒushíhou)我(wǒ)坐(zuò)地铁(dìtiě)上班(shàngbān)。
never, as a habit他(tā)从来(cónglái)不(bù)喝(hē)酒(jiǔ)。
never, as an experience我(wǒ)从来(cónglái)没(méi)去(qù)过(guo)国外(guówài)。

The rules one by one

The form this topic is aboutThe word that calls for it

  1. Frequency adverbs stand before the verb; 有时候(yǒushíhou) can also open the sentence.

我(wǒ)周末(zhōumò)常常(chángcháng)去(qù)爬山(páshān)。I often go hiking at weekends.

  2. The negative of 常常(chángcháng) is 不(bù)常(cháng) or 不(bù)经常(jīngcháng).

    我(wǒ)不(bù)常(cháng)做饭(zuòfàn)。I don’t cook very often.

  3. 从来(cónglái)不(bù) for a habit; 从来(cónglái)没(méi) … 过(guo) for something that has never happened.

我(wǒ)从来(cónglái)没(méi)见(jiàn)过(guo)这么(zhème)大(dà)的(de)鱼(yú)。I have never seen such a big fish.

  4. 一直(yìzhí) means continuously, all along — not “always” as a habit.

从(cóng)早上(zǎoshang)到(dào)现在(xiànzài),雨(yǔ)一直(yìzhí)在(zài)下(xià)。It has been raining non-stop since this morning.

  5. 总是(zǒngshì) is “every time”, and often a complaint.

    你(nǐ)总是(zǒngshì)忘(wàng)带(dài)钥匙(yàoshi)。You’re always forgetting your keys.

A closer look

Two kinds of “always”

English “always” covers two pictures: a line that never breaks and a dot that keeps coming back. Chinese draws them separately. 一直(yìzhí) is the line — 我(wǒ)一直(yìzhí)在(zài)等(děng)你(nǐ), “I’ve been waiting for you the whole time”. 总是(zǒngshì) is the dot — 他(tā)总是(zǒngshì)在(zài)等(děng)别人(biérén), “he is always the one waiting for others”, on every occasion.

Because 一直(yìzhí) is about one stretch of time, it also reaches into the future: 我(wǒ)会(huì)一直(yìzhí)支持(zhīchí)你(nǐ), “I will support you all the way”. And 经常(jīngcháng) differs from 常常(chángcháng) in a further point: it can describe a noun as well, 经常(jīngcháng)的(de)事(shì), “a regular occurrence”.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • 一直(yìzhí) is followed by a verb of movement such as 走(zǒu)

it means “straight on”, not “all the time”.

你(nǐ)一直(yìzhí)往(wǎng)前(qián)走(zǒu),就(jiù)能(néng)看到(kàndào)银行(yínháng)。Go straight ahead and you’ll see the bank.

The literal meaning is “one straight line”; in space it is straight ahead, in time it is without a break.

How to spot it

  • 常常(chángcháng)
  • 经常(jīngcháng)
  • 总是(zǒngshì)
  • 一直(yìzhí)
  • 有时候(yǒushíhou)
  • 从来(cónglái)不(bù)
  • 从来(cónglái)没(méi)…过(guo)

Example sentences

Worth knowing (1)
  • Seldom: hěn shǎo

Chinese has no single adverb for “rarely”. The usual way is 很(hěn)少(shǎo) before the verb — literally “very few (times)”. It sits between 不(bù)常(cháng) and 从来(cónglái)不(bù).

    我(wǒ)很(hěn)少(shǎo)看(kàn)电视(diànshì)。I seldom watch television.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

常常(chángcháng) is the doubled, emphatic form of 常(cháng), and Chinese does not negate the doubled form. “Not often” is 不(bù)常(cháng), or 不(bù)经常(jīngcháng), or simply 很(hěn)少(shǎo), “seldom”.

Wrong:我(wǒ)不(bù)常常(chángcháng)喝(hē)咖啡(kāfēi)。
Right:我(wǒ)不(bù)常(cháng)喝(hē)咖啡(kāfēi)。

Frequency comes before the verb; never as a habit is cónglái bù, never as an experience is cónglái méi … guo.
