Spoken and written Chinese side by side

the same idea in two registers

Many spoken words have a written partner — yóuyú for yīnwèi, rán'ér for dànshì, yīncǐ for suǒyǐ, ruò for rúguǒ — and a text keeps to one of the two.

Chinese has a clearly marked written register, 书面语(shūmiànyǔ), beside the spoken one, 口语(kǒuyǔ). The grammar is the same; the words differ. A text in one register sounds wrong the moment a word from the other slips in — a news report with 但是(dànshì)…啊(a), or a message to a friend with 然而(rán'ér).

The pairs that matter most are the linking words: 因为(yīnwèi) and 由于(yóuyú), because; 但是(dànshì) and 然而(rán'ér), however; 所以(suǒyǐ) and 因此(yīncǐ), therefore; 如果(rúguǒ) and 若(ruò), if; 虽然(suīrán) and 尽管(jǐnguǎn) or 虽(suī), although; 和(hé) and 与(yǔ), and. The written word is often shorter — a single character — or more abstract.

Some written words also sit differently. 然而(rán'ér) and 因此(yīncǐ) like to open a new sentence, often after a full stop. 若(ruò) often takes 则(zé) in the second half: 若(ruò)…,则(zé)…, if …, then …. 与(yǔ), like 和(hé), joins nouns and never whole clauses.

In practice: in an email to a company, an essay or a report, choose the written words; in conversation and messages, the spoken ones. Mixing them in one sentence is like writing “Whereupon, mate” — every word is correct, and the sentence is not.

The form

because: spoken, written因为(yīnwèi)、由于(yóuyú)
however: spoken, written但是(dànshì)、然而(rán'ér)
therefore: spoken, written所以(suǒyǐ)、因此(yīncǐ)
if: spoken, written如果(rúguǒ)、若(ruò)
and (between nouns): spoken, written和(hé)、与(yǔ)

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. Yóuyú is the written yīnwèi and stands in the first half of the sentence.

由于(yóuyú)天气(tiānqì)恶劣(èliè),航班(hángbān)被迫(bèipò)取消(qǔxiāo)。Owing to severe weather, the flight had to be cancelled.

  2. Rán’ér is the written dànshì and often opens a new sentence.

大家(dàjiā)都(dōu)以为(yǐwéi)他(tā)会(huì)赢(yíng)。然而(rán'ér),结果(jiéguǒ)正好(zhènghǎo)相反(xiāngfǎn)。Everyone thought he would win. The result, however, was the exact opposite.

  3. Yīncǐ is the written suǒyǐ and can open a sentence or a clause.

这(zhè)条(tiáo)路(lù)正在(zhèngzài)维修(wéixiū),因此(yīncǐ)请(qǐng)绕行(ràoxíng)。This road is under repair; please therefore take a detour.

  4. Ruò is the written rúguǒ, typical of notices and formal letters.

若(ruò)有(yǒu)疑问(yíwèn),请(qǐng)与(yǔ)我们(wǒmen)联系(liánxì)。If you have any questions, please contact us.

  5. Yǔ joins nouns as hé does, never whole clauses.

本(běn)书(shū)介绍(jièshào)了(le)中国(Zhōngguó)的(de)历史(lìshǐ)与(yǔ)文化(wénhuà)。This book introduces China’s history and culture.

A closer look

How to recognise written style

Four signs mark a written text. One-character words where speech has two: 已(yǐ), 未(wèi), 均(jūn), 于(yú), 若(ruò), 与(yǔ). Classical function words: 之(zhī), 其(qí), 所(suǒ), 而(ér). Four-character expressions. And verbs turned into nouns after a light verb: 进行(jìnxíng)讨论(tǎolùn), “carry out a discussion”, where speech simply says 讨论(tǎolùn).

Just as telling is what is missing. Written prose has almost none of the sentence-final particles — 吧(ba), 啊(a), 呢(ne), 嘛(ma) — that give speech its tone of voice. A text full of them reads as a transcript of talk, however formal its vocabulary.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • the situation is formal although it is spoken — a presentation, a meeting, the news

written words are spoken aloud as a matter of course.

下面(xiàmiàn)由(yóu)我(wǒ)来(lái)介绍(jièshào)一下(yíxià)公司(gōngsī)的(de)情况(qíngkuàng)。I will now give a short introduction to the company.

Register follows the situation, not the medium: a formal talk is written Chinese read out, and a text message is speech typed in.

How to spot it

  • 由于(yóuyú)
  • 然而(rán'ér)
  • 因此(yīncǐ)
  • 若(ruò)
  • 则(zé)
  • 与(yǔ)

Worth knowing (1)
  • Gāi and běn: the written “this”

Written Chinese has two words for “this” that speech does without. 本(běn) means “this, our own”: 本(běn)店(diàn), this shop; 本(běn)次(cì)列车(lièchē), this train. 该(gāi) means “the said, the one just mentioned”: 该(gāi)公司(gōngsī), the company in question. Both are common in news reports.

该(gāi)公司(gōngsī)成立(chénglì)于(yú)上(shàng)世纪(shìjì)末(mò)。The company was founded at the end of the last century.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

Wrong:我(wǒ)很(hěn)想(xiǎng)去(qù)你(nǐ)的(de)生日(shēngrì)聚会(jùhuì),然而(rán'ér)我(wǒ)得(děi)加班(jiābān)啊(a)。
Right:我(wǒ)很(hěn)想(xiǎng)去(qù)你(nǐ)的(de)生日(shēngrì)聚会(jùhuì),可是(kěshì)我(wǒ)得(děi)加班(jiābān)啊(a)。
