No matter: wúlùn and bùguǎn … dōu

the same result in every case

Wúlùn or bùguǎn opens a range of possibilities, and dōu or yě says the result is the same for all of them.

无论(wúlùn) and 不管(bùguǎn) mean “no matter”, “whatever”, “whether or not”. They open a clause that leaves a question open, and the main clause answers with 都(dōu) (or 也(yě)) after its subject: 不管(bùguǎn)谁(shéi)来(lái),我(wǒ)都(dōu)不(bù)开(kāi)门(mén), “whoever comes, I won’t open the door”.

The open question is the heart of the pattern. The clause needs a question word (谁(shéi), 什么(shénme), 哪儿(nǎr), 怎么(zěnme), 多(duō) + adjective), an A-not-A form (去不去(qùbuqù)) or two alternatives joined by 还是(háishi). A plain statement will not do: “no matter if it rains” is 不管(bùguǎn)下不下雨(xiàbuxiàyǔ), not 不管(bùguǎn)下雨(xiàyǔ).

不管(bùguǎn) is the everyday word; 无论(wúlùn) is more formal and is the usual choice in writing. 不论(búlùn) is a further written variant. All of them stand at the start of their clause, and the subject of the main clause comes before 都(dōu).

Compare 即使(jíshǐ): “even if” supposes one case, usually an extreme one. 无论(wúlùn) covers every case at once. That is why it needs an open question — it is a way of saying “for all values of …”.

The form

a question word不管(bùguǎn)谁(shéi)来(lái),我(wǒ)都(dōu)不(bù)开(kāi)门(mén)。
an A-not-A form无论(wúlùn)你(nǐ)去不去(qùbuqù),我(wǒ)都(dōu)去(qù)。
two alternatives不管(bùguǎn)刮风(guāfēng)还是(háishi)下雨(xiàyǔ),他(tā)都(dōu)骑(qí)车(chē)上班(shàngbān)。
however …: 多(duō)无论(wúlùn)多(duō)贵(guì),我(wǒ)都(dōu)要(yào)买(mǎi)。
with 也(yě)不管(bùguǎn)我(wǒ)怎么(zěnme)说(shuō),他(tā)也(yě)不(bù)听(tīng)。

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. The clause after 无论(wúlùn) or 不管(bùguǎn) must leave the question open — with a question word, an A-not-A form or 还是(háishi).

不管(bùguǎn)你(nǐ)做(zuò)什么(shénme),我(wǒ)都(dōu)支持(zhīchí)你(nǐ)。Whatever you do, I’ll support you.

  2. 都(dōu) or 也(yě) follows the subject of the main clause and says that the result holds in every case.

无论(wúlùn)天气(tiānqì)好不好(hǎobuhǎo),爷爷(yéye)都(dōu)去(qù)公园(gōngyuán)散步(sànbù)。Whatever the weather, Grandad goes for a walk in the park.

  3. 不管(bùguǎn) is the spoken word; 无论(wúlùn) is more formal and common in writing.

无论(wúlùn)遇到(yùdào)什么(shénme)困难(kùnnan),我们(wǒmen)都(dōu)不(bú)会(huì)放弃(fàngqì)。Whatever difficulties we meet, we will not give up.

  4. 多(duō) + adjective inside the clause means “however …”.

不管(bùguǎn)多(duō)晚(wǎn),你(nǐ)都(dōu)要(yào)给(gěi)我(wǒ)打(dǎ)个(ge)电话(diànhuà)。However late it is, give me a call.

A closer look

Why the clause has to stay open

不管(bùguǎn) is literally “not caring about”, and 无论(wúlùn) “not discussing”. What one does not care about is a question — whether, who, how much — not a fact. English does the same thing with “whether or not” and “whoever”; Chinese simply keeps the question form intact inside the clause.

不管(bùguǎn)怎样(zěnyàng) and 无论(wúlùn)如何(rúhé) have become fixed phrases meaning “anyway, in any case”, used to close a discussion: 无论(wúlùn)如何(rúhé),我们(wǒmen)都(dōu)要(yào)试试(shìshi), “in any case, we have to try”.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • 不管(bùguǎn) has an object and no open question after it

it is the ordinary verb phrase 不(bù)管(guǎn), “not deal with, not take care of”.

这(zhè)件(jiàn)事(shì)我(wǒ)不(bù)管(guǎn)了(le),你(nǐ)自己(zìjǐ)决定(juédìng)吧(ba)。I’m staying out of this — decide for yourself.

管(guǎn) is a verb meaning “to be in charge of, to bother about”. Only before an open clause does 不管(bùguǎn) become “no matter”.

Worth knowing (1)
  • Bùguǎn zěnyàng: “anyway”

As a fixed phrase at the start of a sentence, 不管(bùguǎn)怎样(zěnyàng) closes a topic and moves on, much like English “anyway” or “at any rate”.

不管(bùguǎn)怎样(zěnyàng),谢谢(xièxie)你(nǐ)的(de)帮助(bāngzhù)。Anyway, thank you for your help.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English “no matter if it rains” states one case, and learners copy it. But 不管(bùguǎn) needs the whole range: rain or no rain. Ask the question inside the clause — 下不下雨(xiàbuxiàyǔ), or 下雨(xiàyǔ)还是(háishi)不(bú)下雨(xiàyǔ) — and the sentence works.

Wrong:不管(bùguǎn)下雨(xiàyǔ),我(wǒ)都(dōu)去(qù)。
Right:不管(bùguǎn)下不下雨(xiàbuxiàyǔ),我(wǒ)都(dōu)去(qù)。

After wúlùn or bùguǎn, leave the question open; after the subject, dōu closes it.
