Moreover: érqiě, bìngqiě, shènzhì

adding a point and raising the stakes

Érqiě adds a point, bìngqiě adds a step in a more formal register, and shènzhì goes as far as the surprising extreme.

而且(érqiě) on its own, without 不但(búdàn), means “and what is more”: it adds a second point and puts the weight on it. 这个(zhège)办法(bànfǎ)简单(jiǎndān),而且(érqiě)有效(yǒuxiào), “this method is simple, and it works”. It can join two clauses or two adjectives, and the second clause often adds 也(yě) or 还(hái).

并且(bìngqiě) also means “and, moreover”, but it is more formal and is especially used to join two actions of the same subject: 他(tā)接受(jiēshòu)了(le)邀请(yāoqǐng),并且(bìngqiě)准备(zhǔnbèi)了(le)发言(fāyán), “he accepted the invitation and prepared a speech”. In conversation 而且(érqiě) is the usual word; instructions, minutes and reports prefer 并且(bìngqiě).

甚至(shènzhì), “even, so far as to”, introduces the item that goes beyond what anyone would expect: 他(tā)忙(máng)得(de)甚至(shènzhì)忘(wàng)了(le)吃饭(chīfàn), “he was so busy he even forgot to eat”. It can stand before a verb, a noun or a clause, and it often joins forces with 连(lián) … 都(dōu).

All three fill a gap that English fills with “and”. 和(hé) joins nouns; between two clauses it is wrong, however natural it feels, and between two verbs it sounds stiff outside formal writing. Either use one of the words here, or simply put the two clauses side by side with a comma — Chinese is comfortable with that.

The form

adding: 而且(érqiě)这个(zhège)办法(bànfǎ)简单(jiǎndān),而且(érqiě)有效(yǒuxiào)。
formal: 并且(bìngqiě)他(tā)接受(jiēshòu)了(le)邀请(yāoqǐng),并且(bìngqiě)准备(zhǔnbèi)了(le)发言(fāyán)。
even: 甚至(shènzhì)他(tā)忙(máng)得(de)甚至(shènzhì)忘(wàng)了(le)吃饭(chīfàn)。
甚至(shènzhì) with 连(lián)这(zhè)件(jiàn)事(shì)甚至(shènzhì)连(lián)他(tā)妈妈(māma)都(dōu)不(bù)知道(zhīdao)。
甚至(shènzhì) before a noun很(hěn)多(duō)大人(dàren),甚至(shènzhì)孩子(háizi),都(dōu)会(huì)用(yòng)这个(zhège)软件(ruǎnjiàn)。

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. 而且(érqiě) on its own adds a further point and puts the weight on it.

天(tiān)黑(hēi)了(le),而且(érqiě)开始(kāishǐ)下雨(xiàyǔ)了(le)。It had got dark, and on top of that it had started to rain.

  2. 并且(bìngqiě) joins two actions of the same subject in formal speech and writing.

公司(gōngsī)接受(jiēshòu)了(le)他(tā)的(de)建议(jiànyì),并且(bìngqiě)马上(mǎshàng)开始(kāishǐ)实施(shíshī)。The company accepted his suggestion and began putting it into practice at once.

  3. 甚至(shènzhì) introduces the item that goes beyond what anyone would expect.

他(tā)的(de)中文(Zhōngwén)很(hěn)好(hǎo),甚至(shènzhì)会(huì)写(xiě)毛笔字(máobǐzì)。His Chinese is excellent — he can even write with a brush.

  4. 甚至(shènzhì) often joins forces with 连(lián) … 都(dōu).

我(wǒ)太(tài)累(lèi)了(le),甚至(shènzhì)连(lián)话(huà)都(dōu)不(bù)想(xiǎng)说(shuō)。I’m so tired I don’t even feel like talking.

  5. 和(hé) joins nouns; between two clauses use 而且(érqiě), 并且(bìngqiě) or just a comma.

我(wǒ)洗(xǐ)了(le)衣服(yīfu),而且(érqiě)把(bǎ)房间(fángjiān)也(yě)打扫(dǎsǎo)了(le)。I did the washing, and I cleaned the room as well.

Other ways of adding

Inside a clause, the adverbs 也(yě) and 还(hái) add things on their own, without any conjunction. Between sentences, 另外(lìngwài) (“besides, in addition”) introduces a separate point, and 此外(cǐwài) does the same in writing.

In conversation, 再说(zàishuō) adds one more argument to support a point already made: 太(tài)晚(wǎn)了(le),再说(zàishuō)外面(wàimiàn)还(hái)在(zài)下雨(xiàyǔ),明天(míngtiān)去(qù)吧(ba), “it’s too late — and besides, it’s still raining; let’s go tomorrow”.

How to spot it

  • 而且(érqiě)
  • 并且(bìngqiě)
  • 甚至(shènzhì)

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English “and” links the two clauses without a second thought. 和(hé) cannot: it joins nouns, not clauses. Between two clauses, Chinese uses 而且(érqiě) when the second point adds something, or a plain comma.

Wrong:他(tā)会(huì)做饭(zuòfàn)和(hé)做(zuò)得(de)很(hěn)好(hǎo)。
Right:他(tā)会(huì)做饭(zuòfàn),而且(érqiě)做(zuò)得(de)很(hěn)好(hǎo)。

Érqiě adds, bìngqiě adds formally, shènzhì goes to the extreme — and hé stays between nouns.
