Even if: jíshǐ … yě

conceding a supposition

Jíshǐ supposes something, even something unlikely, and yě says that the result stands all the same.

即使(jíshǐ) means “even if”. It introduces a supposition, and the second clause carries 也(yě) after its subject: 即使(jíshǐ)下雨(xiàyǔ),我们(wǒmen)也(yě)要(yào)去(qù), “even if it rains, we are still going”. Whatever is supposed, the result does not change — that is what 也(yě) says.

The difference from 虽然(suīrán) is the difference between English “even if” and “even though”. 虽然(suīrán) admits something that is true: it is raining. 即使(jíshǐ) supposes something that may or may not happen: it might rain. English speakers often use 虽然(suīrán) for both, and then a sentence about tomorrow sounds as if the speaker already knew the weather.

In everyday speech 就是(jiùshì) and 就算(jiùsuàn) do the same job: 就是(jiùshì)你(nǐ)不(bù)说(shuō),我(wǒ)也(yě)知道(zhīdao), “even if you don’t say it, I know”. 即便(jíbiàn) is a written variant. All of them take 也(yě) in the second half.

The supposition is often an extreme case. 即使(jíshǐ)是(shì) + a noun means “even (somebody like) …”: 即使(jíshǐ)是(shì)老师(lǎoshī)也(yě)不(bù)一定(yídìng)知道(zhīdao), “even a teacher might not know”. With 再(zài) and an adjective it reaches the limit: 即使(jíshǐ)再(zài)忙(máng), “however busy”.

The form

even if即使(jíshǐ)下雨(xiàyǔ),我们(wǒmen)也(yě)要(yào)去(qù)。
with 再(zài): however …
with a negative即使(jíshǐ)他(tā)来(lái),我(wǒ)也(yě)不(bú)见(jiàn)他(tā)。
a fact: 虽然(suīrán) instead虽然(suīrán)下雨(xiàyǔ)了(le),我们(wǒmen)还是(háishi)去(qù)了(le)。

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. 即使(jíshǐ) introduces a supposition, and 也(yě), after the subject of the second clause, says that the result stands anyway.

Even if it snows heavily tomorrow, I’ll still have to go to work.

  2. Use 即使(jíshǐ) for what may or may not happen, 虽然(suīrán) for what is already true.

Even if you don’t agree, I’ll do it this way.

  3. 就是(jiùshì) … 也(yě) says the same thing in everyday speech.

I wouldn’t take it even if you gave it to me for nothing.

  4. With 再(zài) and an adjective, the supposition is pushed to the limit: “however …”.

However tiring work gets, he phones home every day.

A closer look

A family of “even if” words

即使(jíshǐ) is neutral and works in speech and writing. 即便(jíbiàn) is its written twin. 就是(jiùshì) and 就算(jiùsuàn) are the spoken forms — 就算(jiùsuàn) is particularly common and can sound a little challenging, “even granting that”. 哪怕(nǎpà) is the strongest, used for the most extreme or the smallest case.

The second half takes 也(yě) after its subject in all of them. 还是(háishi) is also possible for “still”, and with a negative 也(yě)不(bù) or 也(yě)没(méi) is the normal combination.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • 就是(jiùshì) is not followed by a second clause with 也(yě)

it is the ordinary 就(jiù) + 是(shì): “is exactly, is the very”.

This is the very shop I was talking about.

Only the frame with 也(yě) turns 就是(jiùshì) into “even if”. Without it, the two characters are an emphatic “is”.

How to spot it

Even if it rains tomorrow, the match will go ahead as planned.

Even if I fail, I won’t regret it.

Worth knowing (1)
  • “Even” without “if”

When English “even” picks out a person or thing — “even the teacher” — and there is no supposition, Chinese uses 连(lián) … 都(dōu) or 连(lián) …

Even the teacher doesn’t know this character.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

Nobody knows yet whether it will rain tomorrow, so this is a supposition, not a fact. 虽然(suīrán) can only admit what is already true; it is “even though”, not “even if”.

Right:即使(jíshǐ)明天(míngtiān)下雨(xiàyǔ),我(wǒ)也(yě)要(yào)去(qù)。

Jíshǐ for “even if” (supposed), suīrán for “although” (true) — and yě after the subject.
