4  ·  Complements after the verb

When direction is not about space

extended meanings of direction complements

Qǐlai, xiàqu, chūlai and xiàlai also mean starting, carrying on, bringing to light and settling.

Several compound direction complements have meanings that have little to do with space. They are easier to learn as meanings of their own than to work out from “up”, “down” and “out” — just as English “give up” and “work out” have to be learned as wholes.

起来(qǐlai) has three uses. After a verb or adjective it can mean that something starts and continues: 她(tā)哭(kū)起来(qilai)了(le), “she started crying”; 天(tiān)热(rè)起来(qilai)了(le), “it is getting warm”. After a verb of perceiving or doing it means “when you look / do it”: 看起来(kànqǐlai) “looks”, 听起来(tīngqǐlai) “sounds”, 说(shuō)起来(qilai)容易(róngyì) “easy to say”. And after 想(xiǎng) it means recalling: 想(xiǎng)起来(qilai), “remember”.

下去(xiàqu) means carrying on with something already under way, into the future: 说(shuō)下去(xiaqu), “go on (speaking)”. 下来(xiàlai) means coming to rest, or being fixed: 停(tíng)下来(xialai) “stop”, 安静(ānjìng)下来(xialai) “calm down”, 记(jì)下来(xialai) “write down”, and with time, something kept up from the past until now.

出来(chūlai) means that something comes to light: 认(rèn)出来(chulai) “recognise”, 听(tīng)出来(chulai) “tell by listening”, 想(xiǎng)出来(chulai) “come up with (an idea)”. That last one is the trap: 想(xiǎng)出来(chulai) produces something new, 想(xiǎng)起来(qilai) recovers something you once knew.

The form

start and go on孩子(háizi)哭(kū)起来(qilai)了(le)。
seems, when you look这(zhè)个(ge)菜(cài)看起来(kànqǐlai)很(hěn)好吃(hǎochī)。
remember我(wǒ)想(xiǎng)起来(qilai)了(le)!

The rules one by one

The form this topic is about

  1. 起来(qǐlai) after a verb or an adjective can mean that something starts and keeps going.

    天(tiān)慢慢(mànmàn)热(rè)起来(qilai)了(le)。It is slowly getting warmer.

  2. 看起来(kànqǐlai), 听起来(tīngqǐlai) and verb + 起来(qǐlai) mean “when you look / listen / do it”.

    你(nǐ)的(de)计划(jìhuà)听起来(tīngqǐlai)不错(búcuò)。Your plan sounds good.

  3. 下去(xiàqu) means carrying on with something already under way.

你(nǐ)说(shuō)得(de)很(hěn)好(hǎo),请(qǐng)继续(jìxù)说(shuō)下去(xiaqu)。You are doing very well — please go on.

  4. 下来(xiàlai) means coming to rest or being fixed: stopping, calming down, writing something down.

请(qǐng)把(bǎ)这(zhè)个(ge)电话(diànhuà)号码(hàomǎ)记(jì)下来(xialai)。Please write this phone number down.

  5. 出来(chūlai) means that something is recognised or worked out.

我(wǒ)一下子(yíxiàzi)就(jiù)听(tīng)出来(chulai)是(shì)你(nǐ)。I could tell straight away that it was you.

A closer look

Xiàlai and xiàqu on the time line

Applied to time, the two complements look in opposite directions from now. 下来(xiàlai) brings something from the past up to the present: 这(zhè)个(ge)习俗(xísú)是(shì)从(cóng)古代(gǔdài)传(chuán)下来(xialai)的(de), “this custom has been handed down from ancient times”.

下去(xiàqu) carries something from now into the future: 坚持(jiānchí)下去(xiaqu), “keep it up”. So after a long effort you can say 我(wǒ)坚持(jiānchí)下来(xialai)了(le), “I saw it through”, and at the start of one, 我(wǒ)要(yào)坚持(jiānchí)下去(xiaqu), “I will keep going”.

Exceptions and special cases (1)
  • a verb with 起来(qǐlai) “start” has an object

the object goes between 起(qǐ) and 来(lái).

外面(wàimiàn)下(xià)起(qǐ)雨(yǔ)来(lai)了(le)。It has started to rain outside.

As with spatial directions, the object cannot follow 来(lái); the complement opens to let it in.

How to spot it

  • 起来(qǐlai)
  • 看起来(kànqǐlai)
  • 下去(xiàqu)
  • 下来(xiàlai)
  • 出来(chūlai)

Worth knowing (1)
  • Easy to say, hard to do

Verb + 起来(qǐlai) followed by a judgement is a favourite way of saying what something is like in practice: 说(shuō)起来(qilai)容易(róngyì),做(zuò)起来(qilai)难(nán), “easier said than done”.

这(zhè)件(jiàn)衣服(yīfu)穿(chuān)起来(qilai)很(hěn)舒服(shūfu)。This top is very comfortable to wear.

The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English “I came up with his name” and “his name came back to me” are close; Chinese keeps them apart. 想(xiǎng)出来(chulai) produces something that did not exist before — an idea, a solution. A name you once knew is recalled with 想(xiǎng)起来(qilai).

Wrong:我(wǒ)想(xiǎng)出(chū)他(tā)的(de)名字(míngzi)来(lai)了(le)。
Right:我(wǒ)想(xiǎng)起(qǐ)他(tā)的(de)名字(míngzi)来(lai)了(le)。

Qǐlai starts or seems, xiàqu carries on, xiàlai settles, chūlai brings to light.
