日本語話者がつまずきやすいポイント
注意
日本語では「壁に」「3階に」「家に」と、何でも「に」で済みます。そのため英語では、手近な前置詞をつい選んでしまいがちです。at the wall、in the third floor、in home。迷ったら、それが点なのか、面なのか、囲まれた空間なのかを考えてください。壁は面なのでon the wall。建物の階も面なのでon the third floorです。ウェブサイトやページ番号もonで、on the website、on page 3。新聞はin the newspaperと言います。

場所にも、時と同じ段階があります。atは点です。at the door、at the station、at work。onは面や線です。on the table、on the wall、on the second floor。inは囲まれた空間です。in the box、in London、in the car。日本語の「〜の上に」「〜の中に」がヒントになります。「上」はたいていon、「中」はたいていinです。ただし、壁の絵は日本語では「壁に」ですが、英語では面に接しているのでon the wallです。
個別に覚えたい組み合わせもあります。on the bus、on the train、on the plane（バス・電車・飛行機の中）。でもin the car、in a taxi（車の中）。立って歩ける乗り物はon、乗り込んで座るだけの乗り物はinと考えると覚えやすいでしょう。「3階に」はon the third floorで、inではありません。at home、at school、at universityには冠詞が付きません。
住所は、番地があればatです。at 14 Baker Street。番地がなければinで、in Baker Street（アメリカ英語ではon Baker Street）です。
