日本語話者がつまずきやすいポイント
注意
日本語の「もっと大きい」「もっと簡単」の感覚で、moreと-erを重ねてしまう人がたくさんいます。more bigger、more easier、more better。これは誤りです。-erとmoreはどちらも単独で「もっと」を表すので、使えるのはどちらか一方だけ。短い語は-er、長い語はmoreです。もう1つよくあるのがthanの付け忘れです。

日本語の比較は語を足して表します。「〜より大きい」「もっと大きい」「いちばん大きい」と言っても、「大きい」そのものは変わりません。英語では形容詞の形を変えます。1音節の形容詞と、-yで終わる2音節の形容詞には-erと-estを付けます。old – older – the oldest、easy – easier – the easiest。それより長い形容詞には、前にmoreとthe mostを置きます。interesting – more interesting – the most interesting。
不規則なものもあります。good – better – the best、bad – worse – the worst、far – further/farther – the furthest、little – less – the least、much/many – more – the most。
比べる相手はthanで示します。bigger than（〜より大きい）。「〜と同じくらい」はas … asで、as big asです。最上級の前には必ずtheが付きます。語順にも注意しましょう。日本語は「私は彼より背が高い」と比べる相手が先に来ますが、英語はI am taller than himで、比べる相手は後ろです。
比較の形は重ねられません。more biggerもmore betterも誤りです。日本語の「もっと大きい」につられて-erの前にさらにmoreを置きたくなりますが、-erだけですでに「もっと」の意味になっています。
