汉语一个“在”管所有地点，于是英语里常常随手抓一个介词：at the wall、in the third floor、in home。拿不准时想一想：是一个点、一个面，还是一个封闭的空间？墙是一个面，所以是 on the wall；楼层也是一个面，所以是 on the third floor。网页和页码同样用 on：on the website、on page 3；报纸则说 in the newspaper。

地点和时间用的是同一套层次。at 是一个点：at the door、at the station、at work。on 是一个面或一条线：on the table、on the wall、on the second floor。in 是一个封闭的空间：in the box、in London、in the car。汉语的“在……上”“在……里”能帮你一把：“上”常常对应 on，“里”常常对应 in。
有些搭配要单独记：on the bus、on the train、on the plane（在公共汽车上、火车上、飞机上），但 in the car、in a taxi（在车里）——这和汉语的说法倒是很像。“在三楼”是 on the third floor，不是 in。还有 at home、at school、at university，都不加冠词。
地址：有门牌号用 at：at 14 Baker Street；没有门牌号用 in：in Baker Street（美式：on Baker Street）。
