中文母语者最容易踩的坑

注意

中文“以前我住在北京，现在住在上海”里，“住”前后都没有变化，只靠“以前”和“现在”区分。直译成 Before, I live in Beijing，英语母语者会觉得时间是乱的。说过去的习惯或状态，用 used to：I used to live in Beijing。另外，used to 和 be used to 看起来几乎一样，意思却完全不同：I used to work here 是“我以前在这里工作”，I am used to working here 是“我已经习惯在这里工作了”。

错误：Before, I live in Beijing, but now I live in Shanghai.

正确：I used to live in Beijing, but now I live in Shanghai.

used to 加动词原形，表示过去存在、但现在已经不再存在的状态或习惯。和现在的对比永远包含在里面：I used to smoke 的意思是我现在不抽了。

中文用“以前”“过去”来表达这个意思：“我以前住在北京”。照搬中文的结构，就会写出 Before I live in Beijing——时间词有了，动词却没变。英语要么用 used to，要么至少用一般过去时：I used to live in Beijing，I lived in Beijing before。

would 也能表达同样的意思，但只用于反复发生的动作，不用于状态。Every summer we would drive to the coast 是对的；I would live in Bonn 不对，因为“住”是状态。拿不准时，used to 总是可以用的，would 不一定。要和它区分的是 be used to，后面接名词或 -ing，与过去无关，意思是“习惯于”。
