中文母语者最容易踩的坑

注意

“因为……所以……”是中文里最自然的搭配，直译成英语就是 Because it was raining, so we stayed in——原因说了两遍，在英语里是错的。要么用 because，要么用 so，不能都用。第二个错误是 because 直接加名词：“因为坏天气”不是 because the bad weather，而是 because of the bad weather。“虽然……但是……”也是同样的道理：although 和 but 不能同时出现。

错误：Because the bad weather, so we stayed at home.

正确：Because of the bad weather, we stayed at home.

原因用 because、as 或 since 引导，后面跟完整的句子。如果后面只有一个名词，就要用 because of、due to 或 owing to：because of the rain。中文的“因为”后面既可以跟句子（因为下雨了），也可以跟名词（因为天气），英语却必须分开。

结果用 so：It was raining, so we stayed in。不要和 so that 混淆，so that 表示目的：I left early so that I would not miss the train。

表示目的，英语最常用的是简单的不定式：I left early to catch the train。只有在主语改变或需要情态动词时，才用 so that。

最重要的一点：中文说“因为……所以……”，两个词成对出现；英语里 because 和 so 只能选一个。therefore、thus 和 consequently 用于书面语，是副词而不是连词：It was late; therefore, we left。
