中文母语者最容易踩的坑

中文习惯在“我认为”“我觉得”后面停顿，加一个逗号；英语在 that 前面，或者省略了 that 的地方，都不加逗号：I believe that this is a mistake. 另一个更常见的问题是“一逗到底”：用逗号把两个完整的句子连起来，比如 It was late, we went home. 在英语里，这样的句子要么用句号分开，要么加上连词：It was late, so we went home.

中文写作里，逗号可以一个接一个，把好几个完整的意思串成一句，直到说完才用句号。英语不行：两个完整的句子（各有主语和谓语）之间只放一个逗号，是一个明显的错误。I called her, she did not answer. 要么用句号分开，要么在逗号后面加上 and、but、so 这样的连词：I called her, but she did not answer.
有些地方中文习惯停顿一下，英语却不加逗号。最重要的一条：that 前面不加逗号。中文写“我认为，这是个错误”很自然，英语却是 I think that he is right——哪里都没有逗号。限定性定语从句前（The book that I read）和表示目的的不定式前（I went out to buy bread）也不加。
需要加逗号的地方：放在句首的状语或从句后面（After the meeting, we went home）、插入的补充说明两边（My brother, who lives in Kiel, …）、列举的各项之间，以及用 but、and、so 连接两个完整句子的时候。注意：英语列举用的是逗号，不是顿号——英文里没有“、”。
列举时最后一个 and 前面的逗号——red, white, and blue——叫作 Oxford comma。美式英语里很常见，英式英语里可加可不加；关键是全文保持一致。
