形容词不能单独代替名词，要用 one 或 ones 来占位。
I prefer the smaller one.我更喜欢小一点的那个。

有两个错误都来自汉语的习惯。第一个是漏掉 one：照着“我要红的”说成 I want the red。第二个是多加：照着“我的那个”说成 my one，其实用 mine 就够了。

汉语可以说“我要红的”“大的便宜”，一个“的”就把名词省掉了。英语里形容词不能这样单独站着，必须有一个词来占住名词的位置：I’ll take the red one. 没有 one，这句话就不完整。可以把这里的 one 看作英语里的“……的那个”。
复数用 ones：the blue ones、the ones on the left。在 which、this、that、each、every 后面也用它：Which one do you mean?（你说的是哪个？）
数词以及 some、any、both 后面不用 one：I have two. 物主代词后面也不用：mine is older，不说 my one is older。
还有一个不同的 one，表示泛指的“人”：One never knows. 这是比较正式的书面语；日常口语里用 you：You never know.（谁知道呢。）
