中文说“她可能在家”,“可能”后面直接接“在家”。很多学习者因此写出 She maybe at home——句子里根本没有动词。maybe(一个词)是副词,相当于“也许”,通常放在句首:Maybe she is at home;may be(两个词)是情态动词加 be:She may be at home。还要注意 may not 有两种理解:可以是禁止(Visitors may not enter),也可以是“可能不”(She may not know)。想清楚地表达后者,就用 might not。

may 有两种意思。第一种是正式的许可:May I come in?(我可以进来吗?)它比 can 更礼貌,常见于书面规定和对陌生人说话时。第二种是可能性:She may be at home(她可能在家)。
在今天的英语里,might 不是 may 的过去式,而是程度上的区别:它让推测更不确定。She may come 是“她很可能会来”,She might come 是“她说不定会来”。差别不大,但听得出来。
中文的“可能”“也许”是副词,可以放在主语后面而不需要别的动词:“她可能在家”。英语的 may 是情态动词,后面一定要跟动词原形,所以是 She may be at home,be 不能丢。其他时态的许可用 be allowed to:We were allowed to stay。may not 表示禁止,比 must not 更正式、语气更缓和。
