中文母语者最容易踩的坑
注意
中文“暴风雨来的时候我看电视”两个动词都没有标记，于是很多人把两个动词都译成一般过去时：I watched television when the storm started。可这句英语的意思是：暴风雨开始以后，我才去看电视。想说“暴风雨开始时我正在看电视”，就要用 I was watching television when the storm started。也别忘了 was：I watching 是错的。

过去进行时由 was 或 were 加动词的 -ing 形式构成。它描述过去某个时刻已经在进行中的事——也就是另一件事发生时的背景。
它和一般过去时的配合才是这种形式真正的用途：较长的过程用进行时，中途插进来的短暂事件用一般过去时。while 引出那个较长的过程，when 引出那个短暂的事件。
中文表达这层意思很方便：“我在做饭的时候，电话响了”“我正看着电视，暴风雨来了”。这里的“在”“正……着”正好提示了英语的 was/were + -ing。但中文也常常把“在”省掉：“我看电视的时候……”，这时英语仍然必须用进行时。
