主语相同时，and、but 和 or 后面的主语可以省略。

“因为下雨，所以我们待在家里”是很自然的汉语，照着说就成了 Because it was raining, so we stayed in。英语里 because 和 so 不能同时出现在一个句子里，去掉哪一个都可以。同样，“虽然……但是……”也只能留一个：although 或 but。

用 and、but 和 or 可以把两个句子连起来，相当于“和”“但是”“或者”：I like tea and she likes coffee.（我喜欢茶，她喜欢咖啡。）The flat is small but it is cheap.（房子小，但是便宜。）We can walk or we can take the bus.（我们可以走路，也可以坐公交车。）
so 引出结果，相当于“所以”：It was late, so we went home. because 引出原因，相当于“因为”：We went home because it was late. 两个词方向相反——so 放在结果前面，because 放在原因前面。
汉语习惯把“因为”和“所以”成对使用：“因为下雨，所以我们没出去。”英语不行：一个句子里只能用其中一个。要么 Because it was raining, we stayed in.，要么 It was raining, so we stayed in. 两个一起用，英语读者会觉得多了一个连词。
两部分主语相同时，and、but、or 后面的主语通常省略：She opened the door and went in.（她开门进去了。）书面上 so 前面一般加逗号，because 前面不加。
