Three Days Without a Signal
En una ruta por la montaña Jakob se queda sin cobertura, y descubre otra manera de viajar.
Una historia de viaje con muchas oraciones condicionales. Fíjate en lo que Jakob se imagina (If I had …, I would …) y en lo que pasa de verdad.
Jakob had planned every hour of his walking holiday on his phone: the route, the weather, the places to eat and, of course, the photos he would share each evening. On the second morning, about two hours above the last village, the phone showed no signal at all. At first he was annoyed. Then he was worried.
If he had brought a paper map, he would have felt better. He had not. The path was well marked, however, so he kept going and reached a small guesthouse in the late afternoon. The owner, a woman in her sixties called Agnes, laughed when he held his phone up to the window. "You will not find anything here," she said. "The nearest signal is two valleys away."
That evening there were six guests around one long table. Nobody looked at a screen, because nobody could. A couple from the coast explained which path to take the next day and drew it for him on the back of a menu. An old man told stories about the winter when the village had been cut off for three weeks.
Jakob stayed three nights instead of one. He walked without checking the time, ate whatever Agnes cooked and slept better than he had in months. When he finally came down into the valley and the phone found a signal again, it immediately showed forty-two new messages.
He read them on the bus and realised that none of them had been urgent. If someone had asked him a week earlier whether he could live without his phone for three days, he would have said no. Now he was already planning the next trip, this time with a paper map.
