Thanks for making time, Sam. I wanted to talk to you in person about the senior role, rather than just send you an email.
Thank you for that. I take it from your tone that it is not good news.
It is not the news you were hoping for, no. We have decided not to fill the position this round. I want to be clear that this is not about the quality of your work, which has been outstanding.
Then what is it about? I have led two of the three biggest projects this year. If that is not enough, I really do not know what would be.
That is a fair question, and you should get a straight answer. The feedback from the panel was that you are outstanding at delivering, but that they have not yet seen you develop other people. A senior role here is at least half about that.
I see. Although, to be honest, nobody has ever asked me to develop anyone. I was asked to deliver, and I did.
You are right, and that is in part my fault. I kept giving you the projects where we needed someone reliable, because you were. Had I thought about your career rather than our deadlines, I would have done it differently.
So what happens now? I do not want to have the same conversation again in a year.
Neither do I. Here is what I would suggest. From next month, the two new graduates report to you. You run their onboarding, you give them feedback, and we meet every six weeks to talk about how it is going. In six months we look at the role again.
And if it goes well, is the role actually there in six months, or is that a hope?
I cannot promise the outcome, but I can promise that I will put your name forward, in writing, with evidence. Would that be a reasonable basis?
It would. I am disappointed, I will not hide that. But I would rather have a plan than a polite email.
Thank you for your time, Sam. I wanted to tell you this in person, not in an email.
Thank you. I can hear that it is not good news.
No, it is not what you hoped for. We will not fill the senior position this time. But this is not about your work. Your work has been very good.
Then what is the reason? I have led two of the three biggest projects this year. I do not know what more I can do.
That is a fair question. The panel said that you are very good at getting things done, but they have not seen you help other people to grow. In a senior role, that is at least half of the job.
I see. But nobody has ever asked me to do that. They asked me to deliver, and I did.
You are right, and that is in part my fault. I always gave you the projects where we needed someone reliable. I thought about our deadlines, not about your career.
So what happens now? I do not want the same conversation in a year.
Me neither. From next month, the two new graduates work for you. You help them start, you give them feedback, and we meet every six weeks. In six months we look at the role again.
And will the role really be there in six months?
I cannot promise the result, but I can promise that I will suggest you, in writing, with examples.
All right. I am disappointed. But I would rather have a plan than a polite email.
