El turno de noche
Twelve hours in which almost nothing happens — and then something does.
A text about waiting and paying attention. Notice how the imperfecto carries the whole night and the indefinido steps in at only three points.
El turno empezaba a las diez y acababa a las seis. Nuria llevaba cuatro meses haciéndolo y todavía no se acostumbraba a dormir de día. Decía que el cuerpo aprende antes que la cabeza, y que ella no había conseguido ninguna de las dos cosas.
La fábrica de noche era otro sitio. Sin las voces de la mañana se oían cosas que de día no existían: un motor lejos, el aire en las ventanas, alguien que pasaba por el pasillo de arriba.
Su trabajo consistía en mirar tres pantallas y anotar cada hora una línea de números. En cuatro meses no había anotado nunca nada raro. El compañero anterior le dijo que en once años tampoco.
A las tres y veinte una de las pantallas cambió de color. Nuria miró el número, lo comparó con la tabla y llamó al teléfono que había en la pared, aunque estaba segura de que sería un fallo del aparato.
No lo era. Vinieron dos personas, pararon una máquina y estuvieron hasta las cinco. Nadie le dijo qué había pasado y ella no preguntó. Desde entonces mira las pantallas de otra manera.
