Counting, telling the time, making an appointment.
Numbers and times of day are needed on the first day: paying, reading a timetable, making an appointment. The clock is where the two languages part company. English props the sentence up with a dummy subject and a singular verb — « it is three o'clock » — while Spanish counts the hours and puts the verb in the plural: Son las tres, word for word « they are the three ». Only one o'clock is singular: Es la una. There is no word for « o'clock » to add and nothing standing in for « it ».
