A common trap

Wrong Dame la sal.

Right ¿Me pasas la sal, por favor?

The imperative gets used as a request because it is short: Dame la sal. Among friends that is fine; to a stranger it sounds brusque — as «give me the salt» would in English. The usual form is a question in the present or the conditional: ¿Me pasas la sal? or ¿Podrías pasarme la sal?

Asking politely
