A2 · Can, must, want
Asking politely
The conditional turns a demand into a request.
A polite request is made in Spanish as in English, by a shift of tense: ¿Podrías ayudarme? instead of ¿Puedes ayudarme? — «could you» instead of «can you».
It gets gentler still with the imperfecto: Quería preguntarte algo is «I wanted to ask you something» and sounds less demanding than quiero. This use is very common in daily life, especially in shops and offices — the English «I was wondering» does the same job.
For orders, me pones or me da is usual, often with no polite form at all — with por favor that is entirely enough: Me pones un café, por favor.

Die typisch deutsche Falle
Aufgepasst
The imperative gets used as a request because it is short: Dame la sal. Among friends that is fine; to a stranger it sounds brusque — as «give me the salt» would in English. The usual form is a question with the conditional: ¿Me pasas la sal? or ¿Podrías pasarme la sal?
The conditional and the imperfecto turn a demand into a request.
