Devices and paperwork in Spanish

From the screen to the counter at the town hall.

The computer has two names and the border runs down the middle of the Atlantic. Spain says el ordenador; most of Latin America says la computadora, and both are understood everywhere. The same split turns up more than once in this list — el móvil in Spain against el celular across the water — and it is not a matter of right and wrong but of where the speaker learned the word. Around them sit the borrowings that took a Spanish shape and a Spanish gender: el wifi, el email, la app.
