Ordering, sharing, and paying at the counter.
Pedir covers ordering and asking for, and it is the verb of the whole meal: pedir la carta, pedir un café, pedir la cuenta. What it never does is ask a question — that is preguntar, and the two do not stand in for each other in either direction. Le pedí un café is I ordered a coffee from him; le pregunté por el café is I asked him about it. The same verb also asks a favour: te pido un favor.
