Dejar is three English verbs at once, and what follows it decides which. On its own it is to leave something somewhere: déjalo donde estaba . With a person and a verb it is to let: déjame pensarlo , let me think about it. And with de in front of an infinitive it is to stop: dejar de fumar is to give up smoking altogether. That small de is the whole difference between letting somebody do something and stopping doing it.
