Animals and the countryside in Spanish

What lives outside, and what it lives in.

Spanish has two words where English has one, and the line between them is the moment the fish is caught. El pez swims; el pescado is on the plate, and its name is the past participle of pescar, to fish — the fished one. Nobody orders pez in a restaurant and nobody says a pescado is swimming in the pond. The same split runs through the animals a kitchen uses: a pig in the field and pork on the plate are both el cerdo, but a cow becomes la carne de vaca once it is meat.
