Technology and industry

Devices, networks, machines — and what the drawing says.

What holds these lists together

The names of the devices change; the verbs do not. Log in, reset, save and share appear on every screen, and measure, test and adjust in every workshop. This is also where Spanish splits more visibly than almost anywhere else, along a line an English speaker already knows. Spain says el móvil and much of Latin America el celular, just as British English says «mobile» and American English «cell phone»; the computer is el ordenador in Spain and la computadora in most of Latin America. A manual gives away its market in the first sentence. And some words look more familiar than they are: in electronics la placa is the circuit board.
