Mining in Spanish

Ore, overburden, blasting, spoil — what comes out and what is left.

La veta is the seam of ore running through the rock, and English calls that a « vein » as well: both languages saw the mountain as a body with something flowing in it. Spanish then puts the same word where English changes to another. The veta of a plank is what English calls the grain of the wood, and tiene una veta de crueldad is « a streak of cruelty » — English needs a streak there, not a vein. One picture in Spanish, three words in English, and the mine is the only place the two agree.
